Biogas System
Biogas System
In the Philippines and throughout the rest of the world, farming has been humanities
source of nutrition and sustenance since before recorded history. The planting and raising
of staple crops has formed the livelihood of much of the population up until recently
when that task has fallen to the hands of a select few employing industrialized techniques
in order to maximize outputs and minimize overhead costs. This growth in industrial
agriculture has depended on the deployment of synthetic fertilizers and other agro-
chemicals.
Energy is a necessary demand for further economic progress and in providing a standard
vitality for the community. Renewable energy systems are considered as a favorable key
that plays an essential part in solving the issue on sustainable resources as it provides
clean and efficient power as it electrifies considerable extent of population. Anaerobic
digestion is a process involving the absence of oxygen on the organic substances. Biogas
is one example of the concept of Waste-to-Energy that is now currently being studied
globally as an effort to make renewable energy as replacement to expensive fuels and
provide compensation on the increasing demand in energy.
BIOGAS COMPOSITION ASSESSMENT
Raw biogas energy contains several different types of gases and may vary depending on
the biomass waste used. Biogas comprises of a large percentage of unfavorable impurities
that threaten the electric power yield and restricts its compression ability and offers a
mechanical damage on the system. Indeed, it is essential to implement the several
methods on cleaning, filtering, and upgrading the biogas through the separation and
elimination of contaminants.
DESIGN OF BIOGAS SYSTEM
The Philippine Bio-Digester Backyard Biogas System (BBS) is a product of both designs. It is:
Easier to build
Less expensive, and
Simpler to operate and maintain (clean & repair)
It can be built as a:
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project where expert masonry skills are not required
Using common and inexpensive materials available anywhere.
Biogas production from pig manure where 1-2 pigs excrete 1L (L=liter)
20L/day = 250 Pesos biogas/month
40L/day = 500 Pesos biogas/month
60L/day = 750 Pesos biogas/month
The plan described here is for an 8 cubic meter digester. It can produce up to 1,000 Pesos/month of biogas from
80L/day of pig manure.

ADVANTAGE OF BACKYARD BIOGAS
SYSTEM
Does not need a concrete dome that is difficult to build, expensive and prone to leaks.
Does not need a floating (metal) cover that corrodes, is expensive and difficult to operate.
Does not need a stirring system that corrodes, is laborious and prone to leakage.
The BBS has a simple sediment removal process that is easy and convenient to operate.
The BBS can be located closer to the kitchen or place where the gas will be used to minimize
piping problems like clogging and leaks.
BILL OF MATERIALS
Based on the references and related studies, this type of Biogas system has a significant
advantage and quality performance that is very close to the other type of Biogas design.
This type of system is vital in the Philippines because thousands of urban households
practice backyard farming/piggery. This aids in the reduction of soil and water pollution,
the prevention of health problems and the loss of biodiversity, and, most importantly, it is
a simple and low-cost technology that promotes a circular economy.
