Definition of organic farming

• Organic farming is the form of agriculture that relies

on crop rotation, green manure, compost, biological
pest control, organically approved pesticide
application and mechanical cultivation to maintain
soil productivity and control pests, excluding or
strictly limiting the use of synthetic fertilizers and
synthetic pesticides, plant growth regulators,
livestock antibiotics, food additives, and genetically
modified organisms
Harmful effects of chemicals

• Deterioration of soil health

• Decrease in the population of beneficial insects and
micro-organisms
• Harmful effect on human, animal and plants
• Increases soil, water and environmental pollution
• Increase the expenditure of farmers
• Nutritional quality of produce is decreased
How to start Organic Farming
1. Time period of 3 years is required to convert from
inorganic to organic farming.
2. Use the organic certified seed for sowing and liquid
organic bio-fertilizers for seed treatment.
3. No use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides,
herbicides etc in the field.
4. For nutrient management use only organic manures,
compost, f arm yard manure, green manuring crops , bio-
pesticides etc prepared in the particular field itself.
5. No inputs should be taken from other farmers who are
doing inorganic farming
6. Irrigation water sources should be your own to
restrict the entry of inorganic chemicals from other
fields
7. Machinery used during any operation must be
cleaned every time before using in organic fields.
8. Weed management must be done by following crop
rotation, intercultural operations and using mulching
in the fields.
9. Biological pest management practices like use of trap
crops, light traps, pheromon traps, crop rotation, etc
and bio-pesticides like like bevaria, metarhizium,
verticilium are used.
10. Use of bio-fortified varieties will improve the yield
and nutritional status
Components of Organic Farming
Soil health

• Organic carbon
• pH
• Electrical conductivity
• Porosity
• Texture
• Microbe
• Humus
Nutrients management

• Green manuring
• Crop rotation
• Vermi-compost
• Compost
• NADEP
• Biofertilizers
1.GREEN MANURING CROPS

1. Crops: Sunhemp, Dhaicha,

Cowpea, Pea, Green gram
2. Vegetative portion of all
crops after harvesting can
be used for green
manuring
3. Stage of crop
4. Green manuring will
improve the organic carbon
of soil and improve the
nutrient status
2. CROP ROTATION
Examples
Soybean-wheat-summer mung
Rice-chickpea-sesamum
Rice-wheat-summer mung
Maize-wheat-sesamum
Soybean-Wheat-okra
3. Vermi-compost
• Earthworm species used is Eisenia
Fetida
• Life is about 5-6 months
• 45-50 days is required for
preparing vermi-compost
• Conversion rate 1500 worms
convert 2 quintal manure in
vermicompost in 2 months
Nutrient Analysis of Vermicompost
Parameters Content
pH 6.8
OC% 11.88
OM% 20.46
C/N ration 11.64
Available N (%) 0.50 , Available P (%) 0.30
Available K (%) 0.24 Ca (%) 0.17 Mg (%)
0.06
4. COMPOST
• Compost can be prepared
by all farm residues,
home waste etc.
• Time required for
decomposition depend
on the type of byproduct
used
• BIODECOMPOSER
helps in faster
decomposition of
byproducts , waste etc.
5.Biofertilizers

1.Rhizobium
2.Acetobactor
3.Azatobacter
4.Azospirillum
5.PSB
6.KSB
7.ZSB
8.Biofertisol
Water management
• Drip irrigation
• Micro sprinkler
• Mulches
A. Organic mulch
B. Inorganic mulch
Weed management
• Crop rotation
• Intercultural
operation
• Mulching
7.Biological pest management
