body

language
and its
importance
What role does body language play in
communication and why is it important?

Body language is the use of physical

behaviour, expressions, and mannerisms to
communicate non-verbally. Non-verbal
behaviours can allow people to be at ease,
build trust and connections with others.
However, they can also confuse others,
generate tension, and even create an
uncomfortable environment.
Facial Expressions
Types of facial expressions:
Past research on facial expressions of emotion has focused on the study
of six basic categories—happiness, surprise, anger, sadness, fear, and
disgust
How facial expressions are perceived

People universally recognize facial expressions of

happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and perhaps,
surprise, suggesting a perceptual mechanism tuned to
the facial configuration displaying each emotion.
Body Movements
Different body movements
•Flexion.
•Lateral Flexion.
•Dorsiflexion.
•Plantarflexion.
•Extension.
•Hyperextension.
•Abduction.
•Adduction.
How body movements are
interpreted
Hand gestures often signify the state of well-being of
the person making them. Relaxed hands indicate
confidence and self-assurance, while clenched hands
may be interpreted as signs of stress or anger. If a
person is wringing their hands, this demonstrates
nervousness and anxiety.
Gestures
Different types of gestures
There are three main types of gestures: adaptors, emblems,
and illustrators
How gestures are interpreted
Gesture processing takes place in areas of the brain such as Broca's and
Wernicke's areas, which are used by speech and sign language In fact, language is
thought by some scholars to have evolved in Homo sapiens from an earlier system
consisting of manual gestures
Eye Contact
Purpose of eye contact
Making eye contact helps both people focus on the conversation and read facial expressions. This
can improve understanding. And improving understanding can significantly improve communication
between two people.

How eye contact is interpreted

Eye contact opens and closes communication. Increased eye contact is

associated with credibility and dominance. Lack of contact and blinking are
interpreted as submissive. High status people are looked at, and look more
while talking than listening.
Posture
Types of posture
Two forms of posture have been identified, 'open' and 'closed', which may reflect
an individual's degree of confidence, status or receptivity to another person.
How posture is interpreted
Posture can convey a wealth of information about how a person is feeling as well
as hints about personality characteristics, such as whether a person is confident,
open, or submissive. Sitting up straight, for example, may indicate that a person is
focused and paying attention to what's going on.
Touch
Different types of touch
handshakes, holding hands, back slapping, high fives, brushing up
against someone or patting someone
How touch is interpreted

absent of other cues can signal anger, fear, disgust, love,

gratitude and sympathy depending on the length and type of
touching that is performed
Conclusion

Body language is an important form of

non-verbal communication that can be
used to infer feelings or emotions.
