Executive Summary
Background
Mrs. Fields Cookies is a small company selling freshly baked goods through privately owned specialty stores (each store sells only Mrs.
Fields products). The company has about 8,000 employees worldwide and less than 150 information systems people for a unique
leverage of MIS resources. The company uses information systems extensively in its processing, communications, and other
management functions, including operations of the stores and hiring sales employees.

Role of IT
At Mrs. Fields’ Cookies, IT enables Mrs. Fields’ Cookies to have “Networked Organization Structure”. According to the case, the
organization structure was designed to be flat but at the same time there was a hierarchy (reporting chain). IT enables this structure to
happen by using centralized information system out of Utah and distributed it to everyone as needed.
We definitely describe Mrs. Fields’ Cookies as more of an IT-enabled network consisting of tailored business processes because IT is
integrated with each business process, according to the case study. Some examples are:

Role of MIS at Mrs. Field’s Cookies
Mrs. Fields’ Cookies businesses are more along the lines of a IT-enabled network. Each store
that came in after the first original store was based off the same principal, for which,
Information systems had to be implemented in order to better handle the flow of
information for the managers at each store

Mr. Paul Quinn was in charge of the IT implementation with an 11-person organization that
was responsible for development, support, and operations for the store personal computers
and financial and sales systems. They were also in charge of telecommunications
equipment, a Rolm Private Branch Exchange, and a voice-mail system

This was all done so that the stores would only have to worry about one thing, which was
sell cookies. The information systems help with every day to day processes and makes it
easier on the workers for their sales projections and helped Debbi stay connected with each
store managers on a personal level

The use of IT is one of the most powerful advantages that one can have for a business. It makes
the competition 10x more in favor for being able to utilize IT and it can change a business for
the better in an age of technology. The Fields are still able to continue to portray themselves
through their company is through the power of IT which travels throughout all the businesses
that they own throughout the world

1
Business run in Debbi’s own image
The information system helped Debbi maintain a degree of personal involvement
with each store manager. The technology has ‘leveraged' Debbi's ability to project
her influence into more stores than she could ever reach effectively without it.

2
Networking
The Information system made it easier for the stores to communicate with the
head office via emails. One application dialed the headquarters' computer,
deposited the day's transactions, and retrieved any mail for store employees.

3

comprehensive scheduling of activities within stores, including marketing support, hourly
