INTRODUCTION
When connecting devices to your computer,
you should first look at the different
types of ports
• WHAT IS PORT(HARDWARE):
• External connection device
• Interface between the computer
and other computers or peripheral
devices.
• Is a socket (and the corresponding
plug) that enables an external
device (peripheral) to be attached
to a computer (usually to a
motherboard or adapter card).
• Normally found on the back of the
computer
Uses of Port
• allow computers to have access to
external devices such as computer
printers ,mouse, keyboard
• used to let data and instructions
flow between the computer and
the device
• allows you to plug in external
devices
Characteristics of Port
• All external computer ports have
the following general
characteristics that are useful to
identify
– Shape & size
– Symbol
– Gender

• trapezoid - LPT, COM, SCSI
• rectangular - USB and FireWire

FIREWIRE
History of FireWire

 Developed by Apple Inc.

 FireWire was adopted in 1995
 First product hit the market in 1997
 replacement for the parallel SCSI
VERSIONS
• FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394)
• 1995
• Enhancements (IEEE 1394a)
• 2000
• FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b)
• 2003
• FireWire S3200
• 2006
FEATURES OF FIREWIRE
• Serial port
• speeds up to 800 Mbps
• connect up to 63 devices
• Only supports peer to peer connection
• Hot-swappable
• Plug and play
• Digital transmission (AV-cable and S-video
cable are transmitted by analog signal)
ADVANTAGES
• Low cost
• Operating System (windows 98,
windows 2000, windows XP)
• Generally accepted by consumer
electronic manufactures
• Power distribution capabilities up to
30 VOLTS
• Maximum distance between devices
from 4.5 meters to 100 meters
(cable length)
• Used to connect camcorders, DVD
players and digital audio equipment
to computer
• FireWire is the support of isochronous

Sending Data via FireWire
A 10-bit bus ID that is used to determine
which FireWire bus the data came from
A 6-bit physical ID that identifies which
device on the bus sent the data
A 48-bit storage area that is capable of
addressing 256 terabytes of information
for each node
Availability
FireWire
 mostly used in consumer electronic (DV,
digital Video
recorder)
 25% of new computer equipped with
FireWire port
Disadvantages of FireWire

Not all PCs come factory equipped with

FireWire ports.
FireWire devices are typically more
expensive
than USB devices.
CONCLUSION

There are more FireWire devices

being put on the market every day, and
the prices of existing FireWire devices
continues to drop. If peak performance is
your goal, you owe it to yourself to switch
over to FireWire.
