CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
• Single parenting becomes a challenge. It takes a single parent to
balance two individuals' roles with raising children and running the
house simultaneously. These challenges contribute to solo parents'
living experience that results in factors that describe and affect their
way of living.
• The researcher chooses to focused on challenges faced by single parents, which is
one of the issues confronting the barangay of Sta. Elena, Iligan City. The researcher
wants to recognize and learn about the difficulties, hardships, and challenges of
being a single parent. This study aims to investigate and analyze the lived
experiences of single parents in order to identify the challenges they faced and
commonly encountered by single parents in obtaining funding for their child's needs,
as well as the difficulties they have faced in their daily lives, particularly during this
time of economic crisis.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
• John Bowlby’s attachment theory (1958) as cited by McLeod (2017). The theory means that
secure attachment between a parent and child makes parenting easier and supports parent
or child intimacy, which improves the child’s sense of worth. Absence of interaction involving
the children of single-parent families and the parents can result in attachment concerns can
compromise the effectiveness of parenting strategies, and result in a difficult amount of
stress on custodial parents because they endeavor to enact their parenting responsibilities.
An in depth relationship amongst the single-parent plus the child fosters the child’s social-
emotional development and decreases behavioral concerns.
• Sigmund Freud (1899) as cited by Cherry (2020), this theory implies that the human psyche
is by nature pleasure seeking. Single-parents who are experiencing the pain of separation
liable opt for behaviors that are risky, yet provides all of them with the gratification some
may need to deal with the stressors that they would encounter.
• B.F. Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning (1948) as cited by Shresthe (2017) means that
individuals will usually repeat behaviors that create favorable results.  This relates to single-
parent families because many single-parents struggle with self-reliance because their
dependency on external support is reinforced. Just for example, those who are welfare
dependent can be more contented financially than those that work.
• Erik Erickson’s (1902-1994) as cited by Cherry (2021) theory of psychosocial developmental
suggests when the caregiver is available, consistent, supportive and reliable children achieve
developmental milestones which ultimately supports their trust, independence, self-
awareness and desire accomplish. This theory correlate single-parent families. Children
raised in single-parent households possess the same developmental needs as other children.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
This research addressed the difficulties that single parents encounter in their daily
lives. This research is essential in identifying the difficulties that single parents face.

CHALLENGES FACED BY SINGLE PAREN:

A PHENOMENOLOGY

CHALLENGES EXPERIENCES
SCOPE AND
DELIMITATION
• This study focuses on the challenges faced by single parents including their
difficulties and hardships in handling different situations. This study is
limited to the residence of Barangay Sta. Elena, which belongs to the 44
barangays in Iligan City. Hence, this study does not cover the other 43
barangays of Iligan City. The researchers chose to conduct this specific
barangay because Sta. Elena had a growing population resulting to the
merging of Steeltown and Bayanihan Village.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

• Teachers. This will provide springboard for teachers; This study will be very beneficial to
the teachers. Through this research teachers may know or discover the challenges face by
single parents.
• Single Parent. Single parents are of the most significance of this study because they will
find out what challenges they will experience in the future and for them to avoid what
challenges they have not yet experienced in their daily lives. It will also be able to help

motivation or advice to move on with life.
• Students. At the end of this study the students will finally know and give them some
knowledge about the challenges face by single parents.
• Future Researchers. This study would help the future researchers to be aware and
knowledgeable of the challenges faced by single parent. It would help them to be a better
analyst and it can be a help as a future reference for more studies in the future.
• Local Barangay. This study will help the barangay officials to understand and facilitate
single parents who are residing to their community and for them to be able to identify the
problems and challenges of face of the single parents, and can easily construct a possible

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

• As cited by Garcia and Santiago (2021),  Single parents in the Philippines

are for the most part not settled by any interrogation and legitimate
settlement to have a lawful ascension to create a steady living for both
parties. Couples may intrigue a court for legal separation under Philippine
law, but as it were beneath specific circumstances. Within the Philippines
legitimate separation is the end of conjugal commitments, counting any
existing property relationship between companions
• Ali and Soomar (2019), Due to their hectic schedules of managing many
parenting roles, as well as financial or economic causes or crises, single
parents are unable to complete all of these tasks. Children with a single
parent endure health concerns in addition to monetary and social issues.
Because of a lack of health insurance, a low standard of living, and almost
no or poor quality of care provided by a single working parent, stress in the
child's life is increased.  All of these challenges and explosive variables that
come with solo parenting have an influence on a child's psychological well-
being, leading to feelings of violence, anxiety, sadness, rage, isolation, lack
of social engagement, bad self-perception, and even lethargy
REVIEW OF RELATED STUDY

• According to the study of Stack and Meredith (2017) in titled “The Impact of Financial
Hardship on Single Parents that focuses on exploration of the journey from social
distress to seeking help”. The study revealed that their respondents described food
and fuel poverty, and the need to make sacrifices to ensure that children’s basic
needs were met. In some cases, their respondents went without food and struggled to
pay bills. Isolation, anxiety, depression, paranoia, suicidal thoughts were described.
However, it has been reported that psychological services are not able to take the
needs of single parents into account. Support for single parents must acknowledge
the impact of social circumstances and give more consideration to economic drivers
of distress.
• In a similar vein, Usakli (2013) discovered in his study “Comparison of Children with
Single and Two Parents in Terms of Behavioral Tendencies in Turkey” that children
with single parents are less assertive and more aggressive and submissive in school,
resulting in poor academic performance compared to children with two parents. In
fact, families, teachers, school administrators, and school counselors should be
aware of single parent children's behavioral tendencies. As a result, families,
teachers, school administrators, and school counselors should be aware of single
parent children's behavioral tendencies.

CONCLUSION
This study of challenges faced by single parents aims to find out what are the
challenges encountered by single parents in which they obtain funding for
their child’s needs and the difficulties they have gone through in their daily
lives. To comprehend the effects of being raised in a single-parent household
on children's lives, the researchers are vital to evaluate each family's unique
conditions, including economic disadvantage, residential instability,
parenting abilities, and inter-parental conflict. By all counts and with proven
results, single parents have inconceivable challenges, whether it's financial,
obtaining competent child care, dealing with the child's behavior, or facing
the reality that they are alone or they may feel alone in every manner. These
are the issues that single parents have the most trouble with. Because of
their low means, single parents have a more difficult time raising their
children.
