OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson the learner will be able to
define information processing cycle
State and explain the stages of the information
processing cycle

INFORMATION PROCESSING
CYCLE
It refers to the process of changing data into useful
information. The five steps of the information
processing cycle are Input, Processing, Output, Storage
and Distribution.
Stage 1: INPUT
This is where data is entered into the computer.
This can be done by the use of input devices.
Examples are;
keyboard, mouse, trackball, touchpad, touch screen, joystick,
game pad, balance board, scanner(bar-code readers),
microphone, camera(camcorder, webcam, digital camera)

Stage 2: Processing
Once data has been captured, it needs to be processed in order to
make it useful. This stage involves performing calculations,
editing, sorting, and filtering data, and running programs or
applications. The devices used in this stage is

Central Processing Unit (CPU): the main processing unit of a

computer that performs calculations and executes programs

Stage 3: Output

This stage involves presenting the processed data to the user in

a useful format. The devices used in this stage are referred to as
output devices. Examples of output devices include: monitor,
speaker, headphone, projector, plotter, printer etc.
Stage 4: Storage
Once the data has been processed and output generated, it may be
stored for future use. Data can be stored on various types of
storage devices, such as hard drives, flash drives, or cloud
storage.
Examples of storing information include:
 Saving a document on a hard drive
 Storing a photo on a flash drive
 Backing up data to a cloud storage service
 Archiving old emails on a server
Examples of Storage
Stage 5: Distribution

This is the last stage of Information Processing Cycle where

information are shared or distributed.
In conclusion, the information processing cycle involves four
stages: input, processing, storage, and output. Input devices are
used to capture data, processing devices are used to process
data, storage devices are used to store data, and output devices
are used to present processed data to the user in a useful format
