SKELETAL MUSCLE

Dr.K.Divya,
Alagappa University College of Physical Education, Karaikudi.
SKELETAL MUSCLE
The human organism has more than 600 muscles
and a total of about six billion muscle fibers present in
their body. There are three different types of muscle
tissues in the human body, namely

1. Skeletal muscle
2. Smooth muscle
3. Cardiac muscle

 40 to 45% of the body weight consists of skeletal

muscle.
 The Muscles of arm, legs and those that are attached
to a part of the bony skeleton of the body.
 Skeletal muscles are under complete voluntary
control.
Skeletal Muscle During Exercise

 Primary outcome in exercise is contraction

of skeletal muscle.
 During muscle contraction, a muscle
becomes and shorter and thicker.
 skeletal muscles consume more oxygen
and need more supply of blood during
exercise.
 A working muscle may increase its energy
output by 50 times that of the resting level.
SMOOTH MUSCLE

Smooth muscles are present in the

internal organs and are also not
under voluntary control.
These type if muscles are present
in the internal organs, such as
intestines, stomach, blood vessels
etc.
Cardiac Muscle
Cardiac muscles are present only
in the heart and are also not
under the voluntary control.
The cardiac muscles are
involuntary in nature.
Gross structure of skeletal Muscle

 More than 430 Voluntary muscles in the body, contain

various wrapping of fibrous connective tissues.
