Area of Quadrilaterals

Grade 7 Measurement
Lesson
Objectives
1. To understand how to find
the area of different
quadrilaterals.
2. To find the areas of
compound shapes by
problem solving and
showing reasoning.
Whiteboard Starter – What is the
area of the following shape

If you are willing to apply a

Growth Mindset you will
have the tools/skills
available to solve this
question by the end of the
lesson.
Whiteboard starter – Perimeter of
rectangle and Squares (5 minutes)
Answer the following questions on you whiteboard (show all working out)
Quadrilaterals

Quadrilateral just means "four sides"

(quad means four, lateral means side).
A Quadrilateral has four-sides, it is 2-dimensional (a flat shape), closed
(the lines join up), and has straight sides.
A quadrilateral has:
• four sides (edges)
• four vertices (corners)
• interior angles that add to 360 degrees:
Types of Quadrilaterals
There are special types of quadrilateral:
The area

of a rectangle
9
We can fill the rectangle with
squares.

Remember, we did this earlier when

using the area model of multiplication.

We can measure 3
the area in

Area of a
Rectangle

length

Area =
number in a row × number of rows
length of a row × number of rows
= length × width
= l × w 12

The area

of a
parallelogram

14
We know that

height

base

Area of a rectangle
= length of a row × number of rows
= base × height
15
We can shear a rectangle
into a parallelogram.

We have
height
not added or
taken anything
base
away from the
shape, parallelogram
so… Area of a rectangle
= length of a row × number of rows
= base × height
