Primary pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons are directly introduced into the environment from sources like vehicles and factories. Secondary pollutants including sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and ozone form through chemical reactions of primary pollutants in the atmosphere. Both primary and secondary pollutants are toxic and their levels need to be controlled.
