INTERSECTION
Union and Intersection
of Events
Objectives:
-Identify the union and intersection of events.
-Illustrate of events

M10SP-IIIf-1
No. 1 “Learning Task ”
Find the union and intersection of an event A and B and draw a Venn Diagram in each item.

1.) Given the following sets:

SAMPLE SPACE: { 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12}
A = { 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 }
B = { 2, 6, 10, 11, 12 }
Find: AUB = ? ; A∩B = ?
Answer:

2.) Given the following sets:
SAMPLE SPACE: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50}
If Event A is {1, 2, 3, 4, 5 } and
Event B is { 10, 20, 30, 40, 50}
Find: AUB = ? ; A∩B = ?
Answer:
AUB = { 1,2,3,4,5,10,20,30,40,50}

3.) Given the following sets:
SAMPLE SPACE: {counting numbers less than 16}
A = { event that a number is odd number }
B = { event that a number is divisible by 3 }
A= { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13,15}

Direction: State whether the following are True or False.
TRUE 1.) If A = {5, 6, 7} and B = {6, 8, 10, 12};
then A ∪ B = {5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12}.

TRUE 2.) If P = {a, b, c} and Q = {b, c, d};

then P intersection Q = {b, c}.

FALSE
3.) Union of two sets is the set of elements
which are common to both the sets.

FALSE
4.) Two disjoint sets have at least one element in common.

5.) Two overlap sets have all the elements common.

FALSE
ANALYSIS
1. How do you feel while you are doing the activity?

2. What was one of the challenges of doing this activity?

3. What are the things to remember in getting the

union and intersection of a set?
REMEMBER
Step 1: It is always helpful to start the problem on the last clue or
information given.

Step 2: Subtract the number of elements in the intersection from the

clues started in the problem.

Step 3: The remaining elements who does not belong to event A and B
must be place outside the two circles.
APPLICATION
Direction: Find the union and intersection of events A, B and C.
Given the following sets:
Set A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}, set B = {3, 6, 9, 12, 15}
and set C = {1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16}.
Find:
1) A ∪ B = { 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15 }
2) A ∩ B = { 6, 12 }
3) A ∩ C = { 4, 10 }
4) A ∪ C = { 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16}
5) B ∪ C = { 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15 }
EVALUATION
Direction: Find the union and intersection of events A, B and C.
Given the following sets:
If A = {a, b, c, d}, B = {c, d, e, f} and C = {b, d, f, g};
Find:
1) A ∪ B= { a, b, c, d, e, f }
2) A ∩ B= { c, d }
3) A ∩ C= { b, d }
4) A ∪ C= { a, b, c, d, f, g }
5) B ∩ C= { d, f }
Assignment
Solve the given set and draw a Venn Diagram in each item.
If A = {1, 3, 7, 9, 10};
B = {2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10};
C = {0, 1, 3, 10};
D = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10};
and E = {0}
Find:
1.) A ∪ B
2.) E ∪ D
3.) C ∩ D
