Ma’am Reneliza Palaña
Good morning,
students!
Let’s play a game!

Are you familiar with the game “4 pics 1 word”? Here’s

how you play the game; each level displays four pictures
linked by one word - the player's aim is to work out what
the word is, from a set of letters given below the pictures..
Raise your hand if you want to answer.
Let’s start!

What do think will happen to the ball if it
hits the board instead of inside the ring?
How about if you bump to another
player that is bigger than you?
Imagine that there’s a basketball
tournament in your barangay, team A
started the first quarter of the game
with a three point shot followed by a
series of two point shot. Team A
couldn’t stop their momentum .
What is momentum?
What is momentum?

Things we need to
consider in defining
momentum

a. The object has a mass

b. The object is moving
Any moving object with a quantity
of matter has momentum.
Momentum simply means mass
in motion. It is equal to the p - is the momentum in
product of mass and velocity. kilogram meter per second
p=mxv (km m/s)

v - refers to the velocity

m - is the mass of the
of the moving object in
moving object in
meter per second (m/s)
kilogram (km)

travels at 1.2 m/s?

travels at 1.2 m/s?

Solution: p = mv
Sample problem 1
What is the momentum of 22-kg grocery cart which
travels at 1.2 m/s?

Solution: p = mv

p = (22 kg) (1.2 m/s)

Sample problem 1
What is the momentum of 22-kg grocery cart which
travels at 1.2 m/s?

Solution: p = mv

p = (22 kg) (1.2 m/s)

p = 26.4 kg m/s
What is the momentum of
an object that is not
moving?
What is the momentum of an
object that is not moving?

If any object or any mass is

not moving it has zero
momentum since it’s
velocity is zero

We can say that…

When the object slows down or moves faster,

its velocity increases or decreasea. If there is
a change in the velocity or the mass of an
object, there is also a change in momentum.
And that change of momentum is called
impulse.
Force is needed to change the momentum of
the body
Impulse
The force (F) and the time of contact (t) is
known as impulse (I).

I = Ft = mv
The standard unit for momentum (p) and
impulse (I) is newton-second (Ns) or kilogram
meter per second (kg m/s)
Bodies change their
momentum through
collision
