Network and Dial-up

Connections using Microsoft

Windows

MARITIME ACADEMY OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC – ICT 1 ST SEM AY2006-2007

Objectives:
• Enumerate the hardware requirements for network and dial-up connections
• State the method of connection and communication ;used to establish the
following types of network and dial-up connections:
- Dial-up connections
- Local Area Network Connections
- Virtual Private Network Connections
- Direct Connections
• Configure network connections by setting connection properties, dialing
rules, protocols and security
• Establish a direct network connection by linking a computer directly to
another computer using a crossover cable
• Establish a local area connections by linking computers to LAN using
phone or network adapter
• Perform the steps on how to properly disconnct a computer from another
computer, a network or the Internet
• Recognize and troubleshoot common network connection problems such
as:
- No response when making local are connection
- A hardware error is received when trying to make a conneciton
Hardware Requirements for LAN connection

• Host with NOS and Network Protocol – devices that

connect directly to a network segment and include
computers, both clients and servers
• NIC – the interface between the hosts and the network
media
• Media – carries a flow of information, in the form of bits
and bytes, through a LAN
• Hub (Repeater) – central device for interconnection of
multiple computers; regenerate and retime network
signals
• Bridge – connect two LAN segments
• Switch – connect between LAN and WAN connections
• Router – connect between two WAN connections
Hardware Requirements for Dial-up Connection

• Hosts with NOS and Network Protocol

• Modem (Internal or External)
• Communication Protocol – protocol needed to
communicate the source host to remote host
• Telephone Line (analog or digital)
• Remote Access Server
• ISDN Adapter
• DSL Adapter
What is NETBEUI?
• NetBEUI stands for NetBIOS Extended User Interface
(pronounced net-BOO-ee).
• It is a new, extended version of NetBIOS, (Network Basic
Input/Output System) the program that lets computers communicate
within a local area network.
• NetBEUI formalizes the frame format (or arrangement of information
in a data transmission) that was not specified as part of NetBIOS.
• NetBEUI was developed by IBM for its LAN Manager product and
has been adopted by Microsoft for its Windows NT, LAN Manager,
and Windows for Workgroups products. Hewlett-Packard and DEC
use it in comparable products.
• NetBEUI is the best performance choice for communication within a
single LAN. Because, like NetBIOS, it does not support the routing of
messages to other networks, its interface must be adapted to other
protocols such as Internetwork Packet Exchange or TCP/IP. A
recommended method is to install both NetBEUI and TCP/IP in each
computer and set the server up to use NetBEUI for communication
within the LAN and TCP/IP for communication beyond the LAN.
