ethics
Ethical egoism
-an ethical theory that contends that we act in a way
that promotes our own best interests

2
consequential
ism
is a moral theory that states that the consequences of
one’s actions are the basis for any morality judgment
toward that action. Both utilitarianism and ethical egoism
are theories within consequentialism that focus on the
outcome of conduct as the primary motivation of that
action and any critique of whether or not that conduct is
ethical. The major difference between utilitarianism and
ethical egoism is where those acts are directed.

3
Ethical
egoism
states that moral individuals ought to do what is
in their best interests in the long term. Once one
decides on an action that will aid in doing this, the
individual should act on it. As a form of
consequentialism, ethical egoism declares the
consequences of one’s conduct are the ultimate basis
for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of
that conduct.

4
Ethical
egoism
should not be confused with hedonism(the view
that pleasure is intrinsically worthwhile),
psychological egoism (the claim that people can only
act in their own self interest), and rational egoism
(the view that it is rational to act in ones self interest).

5
Although egoism is not hedonism,
many ecologists, are also
hedonists, like epicurus
Epicurus argued that individuals should live their lives to
produce as much pleasure as possible. However, pleasyre to
Epicurus, is not sensual gratification, but rather sober
thinking. The good that Epicurus believes we should strive
for is knowledge.

Max stirner
German Philosopher, and existentialist, Max Stirner, is a
widely known proponent of ethical egoism. Stirner argues
that the concept of the self is something impossible to fully
comprehend; a so called ’creative nothing’ he described as
an “end-point of language”. He claimed it would be
irrational to not act in ones own self interest, but he claimed
there as no universal self-interest, but this moral goal was
rather subjective. For Stirner, his moral goal was power.

7
Big concept
Ethical Egoism, also known as
egoism, holds that moral conduct
ought to be jusged through self-
interest. Egoism states that the good
consequences for the individual
agent outweigh the consequences
places upon others.

8
Big concept
In egoism, actions could be
considered ethical for the individual
if the one taking the action is
benefited, while any benefit or
detriment to the welfare of others is a
side effect and not as important as
the consequences for the individual.

Is ethical egoism
wrong?

10
Is ethical egoism
wrong?
The fact that it can be in our rational self-interest to hurt others
without a good justification implies that ethical egoism is false
because every serious moral theory and theory of justice will agree
that it's usually wrong to hurt other people (and probably dogs as
well)
