PURPOSIVE

COMMUNICATION
Course Introduction
- Edson Louis Para
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of this session and the activities
therein, students are expected to:
 define purposive communication;
 demonstrate an understanding of the key ideas in
language and communication; and
 appreciate the importance of purposive communication by
writing a three paragraph essay about the significance of
this subject and their expectations in this course.
What is Communication?
Communicatio
n
- the act of transferring or
exchanging information
from one person or group
to another by speaking,
writing, or using some
other medium.
PURPOSIVE
having, serving, or done with a purpose
PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
➯ Purposive communication is defined as a type of
communication that takes place with a purpose in mind.
➯ It is the spreading of a message of communication or an
idea to a specific group of audiences in the best-suited
formats and through the right channels.
➯ An intentional communication that happens within the
bounds of specific contexts.
Contexts

1. 2. 3. 4.
Setting/Environment Social Relations Scenes Culture
(family, school, (friends, spouse, (business meeting, (tradition, practices,
church, etc.) subbordinates, etc.) dinner party, etc.) beliefs, etc.
CONTEXTS

Contexts significantly affect the process of sending and

receiving messages, semantics, choice of channels, words, and
methods of delivery.
What’s in it for me?
The GOAL of this subject is for the students to be
able to communicate (in writing, speaking, and
presenting) effectively and appropriately to a
multicultural audience in a local or global context.
Good communication is essential for
achieving goals in both personal and
professional contexts. When people
communicate effectively, they can share
information, delegate tasks, and make
decisions that lead to success.
