Nanotechnology in Robotics

An Intermediate Robotics Presentation.

What is Nanotechnology?

The ability to do things measure, see, predict and make on the scale of atoms and molecules and exploit the novel properties found at that scale.

Scale: 0.1 and 100 nanometers (nm)

The Term Nanorobots

The engineering of molecular products needs to be carried out by robotic devices. A nanorobot is essentially a controllable machine at the nano meter or molecular scaled that is composed of nano-scale components.

Cont
Nanorobotos would constitue any passive or active structure (nanoscale) capable of actuation, sensing, signaling, information processing, intelligence , swarm behavior at nano scale.

Characteristic Abilities
i. ii. iii. iv. v. Swarm Intelligence - decentralization and distributed intelligence Cooperative Behaviour - emergent and evolutionary behaviour Self Assembly and Replication - assemblage at nano scale and "nano maintenance" Nano Information Processing and Programmability - For programming and controlling nanobots (autonomous nanorobotos) Nano to Macro world interface architecture - an architecture enabling instance accesses to the nanorobots and its control and maintenance

Applications on Nano Robotics :

Potential Medical Applications Breaking kidney stones, Repairing of damaged tissues, Unblocking of arteries affected by plaques, Used to find glucose demand in diabetes patient, Construction of complete replacement body organs.

Current Status of Medical Nanorobots

Nano-pioneer Robert Freitas has designed nanorobots smaller than red blood cells that can travel throughout the human body. His creations would be constructed of carbon atoms in a diamondoid structure with smooth surfaces to prevent rejection from the immune system. Glucose or natural body sugars and oxygen from the body would power these tiny 'bots, which will also possess a two-way communication system.

The robot in this illustration swims through the arteries and veins using a pair of tail appendages.

Purpose of Nanorobots in the environment: To purify oxygen and carbon dioxide, To purify wastes in water, To check diagnose and reorganize biological structures.

Advantages of NanoRobots
Durability, Minimizes the cost of surgery, Faster in terms of operation speed, Operations failures are eliminated.

Disadvantage of NanoRobots
Cluster of different nanorobots with one another is harmful, Production cost is high, Maintenance is difficult.

Conclusion
What challenges would NanoRobots encounter? What is the future of Nanotechnology in Robotics?
