CONCLUSION

2
INTRODUCTION

Background:
 Karnali basin is one of the major basin of Nepal
that originates from Mansorwar and Rakas lake that
extends from 28.2°–30.4° N and 80.6°–83.7° E
 Basin is prone to flooding due to its monsoonal
climate, sediment-rich waters, and complex river
dynamics
 Basin is home to a diverse range of communities,
each with distinct cultural practices

3
INTRODUCTION

About Paper:
 Title: "Improving Understanding of Flooding and
Resilience in the Terai, Nepal"
 Published by the University of Edinburgh, UK on Nov
2017
 Focuses on flooding and resilience in Karnali region
 Multi-disciplinary approach: Hydrological modeling,
socio-economic analysis, and community engagement

4
OBJECTIVES

Research Objectives

 Understanding the role of river sediment on flooding in Terai region

 Improving Flood inundation maps
 Understanding river channeling and its morphology
 Community viewpoints regarding their experiences with flooding, strategies
for constructing flood-resistant homes
 Indigenous flood resilience strategies

5
STUDY AREA

Study Area
 Karnali river plain and Settlement
area of Chisapani, Rajapur and
Tikapur of Western Nepal

6
DATA AND METHODOLOGY

Approach and Methods

 Integration of new field techniques like ADCP, High
resolution Satellite data and 2D hydrodynamic flood
model like Delft3D
 Sediment samples collection from river terraces and
channels
 Community surveys and field observations of nearby
Settlements area

7
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Role of River Sediment on Flooding:

 Results shows 80% of river flows through west
branch in dry season and 50% in wet season
 It suggests that Sediments is mobilized during
peak floods

8
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Flood Inundation Maps:
 Detailed map was produced using higher resolution data
 Flood extent differed from the current flood inundation maps used in Nepal.

9
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Flood Inundation:
 Contrast in Flood Results: Incorporating Aggradation Effects

10
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Understanding river channel migration
 Change in River Morphology was observed through years

11
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Socio-cultural and Political Economy Landscape

of Flooding:
 Households with fewer social and political
networks and economic capital are more
vulnerable to impacts of floods
 Development interventions, such as irrigation
canals and bridges, as well as extraction of
aggregates from rivers has exposed people to
new vulnerabilities

12
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Indigenous and Evolving Flood Resilience
Construction Strategies:
 Resilient houses are being constructed using
either traditional or modern methods

13
CONCLUSION

 Study explores interactions between hydrology, land use, and societal factors
shedding light on flooding challenges
 Paper discusses new techniques and methods for flood study and detailed
mapping
 Emphasizes the need for a balance between engineered solutions and community-
based approaches to achieve sustainable and resilient outcomes
