HYDROLOGY

PREPARED BY:

Hydrology
• Hydrology is the scientific study of the distribution, movement, and
properties of water on Earth. It is a multidisciplinary field that
combines elements of geology, physics, meteorology, chemistry, and
environmental science to understand the behavior of water in various
natural systems.
Key aspects of hydrology
1. Water Cycle
2. Surface water
3. Groundwater
4. Water quality
5. Hydrological Modeling
6. Environmental Applications
7. Climate Change
THE WATER CYCLE
Hydrology involves studying the water cycle,
which is the continuous movement of water
on, above, and below the Earth's surface.
This cycle involves processes such as
evaporation, condensation, precipitation,
infiltration, runoff, and transpiration.
SURFACE WATER
It focuses on the study of water bodies on
the Earth's surface, such as rivers, lakes,
reservoirs, and wetlands. Understanding the
flow and behavior of surface water is crucial
for managing water resources, flood control,
and water quality assessment.
GROUND WATER
Hydrologists also investigate the movement
and characteristics of groundwater, which is
water stored beneath the Earth's surface in
rock formations called aquifers. Groundwater
plays a significant role in sustaining
ecosystems, supporting agriculture, and
supplying drinking water.
WATER QUALITY
Hydrology encompasses the analysis of water
quality, including factors like chemical
composition, presence of pollutants, and the
impact on aquatic life and human health.
Monitoring and improving water quality are
essential for maintaining a healthy
environment.
HYDROLOGICAL
MODELING
Hydrologists use mathematical and computer
models to simulate and predict various
hydrological processes. These models help in
understanding complex interactions and aid
in water resource management, flood
forecasting, and environmental assessment.
