ELECTRIC HAZARD
TYPES OF ELECTRICAL
HAZARDS
• There are three types of electrical hazards

 Thermal ( excessive power)

 Electric shock
 Electric arc blast
ELECTRIC HAZARD

 Electric shock
Occurrence when the body becomes a part of electric current.
Examples include:
I. A person becomes in contact with both conducts in
circuits
II. Touching a live wire and an electrical ground
III. A person may provide a path between an ungrounded
conductor and the ground
ELECTRIC HAZARD

electric shock may cause the following

I. Electric burn
II. Arc burns
III. Thermal contact burn
ELECTRIC HAZARD

• Electric arc blast

If the current is strong enough, the blast effects that can result
from arcing can cause injuries
I. Low energy arc can cause violet explosion or blast in
atmosphere containing the explosive gases, vapor or
combustible dust
II. High energy arc can also damage equipment causing
metal to fly in all direction.
ELECTRIC HAZARD

• Occurrence of electrical hazard at workplace

I. Overloading circuit
II. Faulty or damaged wiring
III. Use of extension cords
IV. Water spill on electrical devices
V. Improper grounding
VI. Incorrectly placed electrical cord
VII. Loose fitting plugs
ELECTRIC HAZARD

• Entry
If any part of the body meets live electricity an electric current
flow through the tissue, which causes an electric shock
HEALTH EFFECTS OF
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Acute
• Electric burn
• In first degree can cause red or pink skin without blistering
• Second-degree, red and moist in appearance with blistering
• Third-degree, dry, tight, and leathery or brown or waxy in
appearance
• Fourth degree; black and charred in appearance with
possible muscle or bone movement.
ELECTRIC HAZARD

• Chronic (physical)
I. Eye problem
II. Ghost pains or itches
III. Joint stiffness
IV. Permanent neurological injuries such as paralysis
V. Itching, possibly as a side effect of the burns
ELECTRIC HAZARD

• Chronic (psychological)
I. Reduce cognition abilities especially verbally recall and
attention span
II. Post-traumatic stress divide (PTSD)
III. Anxiety
IV. Depression
V. Development of phobia
VI. Memory loss especially around incident and recovery
ELECTRIC HAZARD

• Neurotically effects
I. Migraine
II. Tremors
III. Tinnitus (progressive hearing loss)
IV. Dizziness loss of balance or fainting spell
V. Paralysis
VI. Carpal tunnel syndrome due to nerve damage
WORKPLACE HAZARD CONTROL

1. Engineering Control
• Explosion-proof electric panel box
-withstands pressure created by internal explosions and
cools hot gases.
• Bonding and Grounding
-Bonding connects objects together and then ground them.
-Grounding protects objects from lightning in refineries and
petrochemical plants
• Fuse and Circuit Breaker usage
-both prevent the excess flow of current.
2.ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL

This involves changing how people work in the facility.

• Controls include putting policies that help in minimizing
employee exposure to hazards.
• Putting up some warning labels and signs.
• Procedural changes and employee training.

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
• Electricity produced from nuclear energy can produce waste
which can cause gene mutation thus leading to cancer.
• Birds can fly against some power and get electrocuted.
Thus, destroying the wildlife.
