MEASURES OF

POSITION
Quartiles, Deciles and Percentiles
of Ungrouped Data
MEASURES OF POSITION
• It is a number that tells where the score stands relative to the others in a set of
data.
• It is a measure whether a value is about the average, or whether its unusually high
or low.
• It is used for quantitative data that falls on some numerical scale.
• It can be applied to ordinal variables.
General Method
Linear Interpolation
Mendenhall and Sincich Method
QUARTILES OF UNGROUPED DATA
• The quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into four
equal parts.
EXAMPLE #1

•The owner of a coffee shop recorded the

number of customers who came into his
café each hour in a day. The results were
14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11.
Find the lower quartile and upper
quartile of the data.

17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11. Find the lower quartile and upper quartile of
the data.
EXAMPLE #2

•Consider the set of scores in a quiz in

Math 10 of Section Antipolo: 11, 13, 14,
15, 15, 16, 19, 19, 20. Find Q1, Q2, Q3.

Antipolo: 11, 13, 14, 15, 15, 16, 19, 19, 20. Find Q 1, Q2, Q3.
DECILES OF UNGROUPED DATA
• The quartiles are the score points
which divide a distribution into
ten equal parts.
Example #3

•Find the 3rd decile or D3 of the

following test scores of a random
sample of ten students: 35, 42, 40, 28,
15, 23, 33, 20, 18 and 28.
Example #3
• Find the 3rd decile or D3 of the following test scores of a
random sample of ten students: 35, 42, 40, 28, 15, 23, 33,
20, 18 and 28.
Example #4
• Mrs. Renan is a Mathematics teacher. She
gives a 60-item test for remedial class. The
scores of 15 students are 20, 35, 55, 28, 46,
32, 25, 56, 55, 28, 37, 60, 47, 52, 17. Find
the value of 2nd decile, 7th decile and 8th
decile.
Example #4
• Mrs. Renan is a Mathematics teacher. She gives a 60-item
test for remedial class. The scores of 15 students are 20, 35,
55, 28, 46, 32, 25, 56, 55, 28, 37, 60, 47, 52, 17. Find the
value of 2nd decile, 7th decile and 8th decile.
PERCENTILES OF UNGROUPED DATA
• The percentile are the score points which
divides a distribution into one hundred
equal parts.
Example #5

•The list shows the number of bottles of

strawberry jam sold in a day by 14
different vendors: 20, 18, 16, 10, 12, 15,
13, 9, 11, 16, 15, 16, 18, 20. Solve for P43,
P60 and P75.
Example #5
• The list shows the number of bottles of strawberry jam sold in
a day by 14 different vendors: 20, 18, 16, 10, 12, 15, 13, 9, 11,
16, 15, 16, 18, 20. Solve for P43, P60 and P75.
PERCENTILE RANK
• The percentile corresponding to a given value x
is computed by using the formula:
Example #6
• Find the percentile rank of a test score of 38 in the
data set. 42, 33, 38, 30, 27, 40, 49.

following score in Statistics quiz;
4, 8, 9, 12, 7, 15, 14, 6, 10, 11. Find
the first and third quartile.
Example #2

14 different vendors: 20, 18, 16, 10,
12, 15, 13, 9 11, 16, 15, 16, 18, 20.
Solve for D2, D3, D7, and D8.
Example #3
• The height (in cm) of twelve students were
measured as follows: 148, 157 152, 166, 164, 161,
150, 160, 165, 159, 140, 155.
