• A well-defined collection of
objects called elements.
A set of sea
animals
The elements of

dolphin, and

SETS
• A set can be named using capital
letters and we use braces { } to group
the elements of the set separated by
commas.

• If any set contains many elements, we
often use three dots, …, called
ellipsis.
Example:

• In listing the elements of the set, each
distinct element is listed once, and
the order does not matter.
Example:
Set of all letters in the word arrange.
Well-Defined Set
• A set is a well-defined set if the
elements of the set are specific
and can be easily identified.
Example:
1. Set of all colors of the rainbow
• The elements of this set are red,
orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo
and violet.
Example:
2. Set of all odd numbers
• The elements of this set are 1, 3, 5, 7,
9, etc.
Example:
3. Set of all letters in the word pray.
• The elements of this set are a, p, r,
and y.

Null Set
• An empty or null set is a set containing
no elements.
• It can be denoted by using “ Ø “ (null
symbol) or “ { } “ (empty bracket)

Subset
• A subset is a part of a well-
defined set such that all
elements of the subset are
contained in the given set.
Subset
• The symbol “AB” is read as A is
a subset of B.
Subset
• Every set is a subset of itself
and an empty set is also a
subset of every set.
Example: Determine the possible subsets for
the following sets.
1. R = {1, 2}
2. N = {2, 4, 6, 8}
3. P = {red, blue , yellow}
Universal Set
• The universal set, denoted by U,
is the set that contains all
objects under consideration.
Example:
1. Set U contains the set of days in a week
• U = {Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
Saturday}
Example:
2. Set U contains the set of whole numbers
• U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, …}

Cardinality of Sets
• The cardinality of a set is the
measure of the number of
elements in a given set.
Example:
1. X = {A, N, P}
• The cardinality of set X is 3.
Example:
2. Y = {0, 6, 7, ∞}
• The cardinality of set Y is 4.

• The cardinality is finite if the
elements of a set are countable.

• The cardinality is infinite if the
elements of a set cannot be
counted.
Example:
Which of the following set is finite? Infinite?
• A = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i , j , k , l , m, n, o,
p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z}
• B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, …}

The elements of set A are countable. Set A has
26 elements, hence, it is finite.
Infinite Set

B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, …}
The elements of set B cannot be counted. It
elements goes to infinity, hence, the set is
infinite.
