MEASURES OF POSITION

It describes the location of the data

1.Quartile – it divides the data into 4 equal parts
Formula:

2. Decile – it divides the data into 10 equal parts
Formula:
3. Percentile – it divides the data into 100 equal
parts
Formula:

Note: As you can see, the formulas are almost the
same, they only differ in the denominator. Whatever
is the given value of the “k” in the problem that will
also be the value of “k” in the numerator.
Example:
12, 24, 15, 13, 18, 21, 20, 23, 16
Solve for
,,
First we need to arrange first the
data from lowest to highest scores
12 13 15 16 18 20 21 23 24

The computed value just indicate position, but it is not the
final answer. The final answer is in the arranged data set.
Locate the computed value on the arranged data set and
that will be the value of the quartile, decile or percentile. In
our example, the values of are the same, therefore we can
say that and it is equivalent in the median in measures of
central tendency. If the value of the computed
location/position is in decimal point, then, just round it off
to the nearest whole number (Ex: the computed value is
4.57th, then, it will become 5th. If the computed value is
2.34th , then, it will become 2nd.)
