THE

RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
* Is a network of organs and tissues that aids
in breathing.
* The system helps the body absorb oxygen
from the air so organs can work. It als0 cleans
waste gases (carbon dioxide).
FUNCTIONS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
* allows us to talk and smell
* warms air to match the body temperature and
moisturizes it to the humidity level the body needs
* delivers oxygen to the cells in the body
* removes carbon dioxide from the body during
exhalation
* protects the airways from harmful substances and
irritants
PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
* Mouth and nose: openings that pull air from
outside the body int0 the respiratory system
* Sinuses: hollow areas between the bones in
the head that help regulate the temperature
and humidity of the inhaled air
* Pharynx (throat): tube that delivers air from
the mouth and nose to the trachea (windpipe)
PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
* Trachea: passage connecting the throat and
lungs
* Bronchi: passageways from the trachea to the
lungs (one bronchus goes to each lung)
* Lungs: a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located
on the chest that is responsible for removing
carbon dioxide from the blood and adding oxygen
to it
OTHER COMPONENTS THAT WORK WITH
THE LUNGS:
•* Alveoli: tiny air sacs in the lungs where the
exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes
place
•* Bronchioles: small branches of bronchial
tubules that lead to the alveoli
•* Capillaries: blood vessels in the alveoli walls
where gas exchange takes place
*Lung lobes: sections of the lungs – three lobes in the
right lung two in the left
•* Cilia: tiny hairs that move in a wave-like motion to
filter dust and other irritants out of the airways
•* Epiglottis: tissue flap at the entrance to the trachea
that closes when you swallow to keep food and liquids
out from the airway
•* Larynx (voice box): hollow organ that allows you to
talk and make sounds when air moves in and out
ACCESSORY MUSCLES AND BONES IN THE
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
•* Diaphragm: large, thin muscle that sits at the
base of the lungs. It separates the thoracic cavity
from the abdominal cavity.
•* Intercostal muscles: muscles located between
the ribs that help to move the chest cavity during
inhalation and exhalation
•* Ribs: bones that surround and protect the lungs
and heart
