QUESTION DEVELOPMENT

Your task is to:

• research human rights abuses

• choose a country that is allegedly involved in human rights abuses

• research the concept of responsibility to protect and then evaluate whether or not, the international
community (other states) should intervene (step in) and help stop these abuses.

You need to break this into three questions that covers all components:
1. Select and research one country which is alleged to be currently involved in
human rights abuses.
2. The principle of responsibility to protect. Why was this enacted and who
enforces R2P?
3. Investigate what political considerations may stop countries intervening (eg:
UN P5 or international agreements)
WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS
ABUSES?

• Use this video to help

your understanding
• Take notes on what
you think would be
examples of human
rights abuses
COUNTRIES YOU COULD
INVESTIGATE

• China
• Ukraine
• Democratic Republic of Congo
• Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territory
CHECKPOINT

2. Created your 3 questions
3. Shown your teacher your questions
LESSONS 2-5
1. Research
RESEARCH

You have developed 3 questions based off the task description.

You now need to answer those questions using evidence from sources,
such as:

• The textbook

• Government websites

• Educational videos

• Organisational websites (e.g. human rights websites)

Remember: To research well you need to use a variety of sources!

Some resources have been provided for you in this PPT

NOTE TAKING

• Notes shouldn't be big paragraphs of text

• Use diagrams, graphic organisers, dot-points, highlighting,
definitions and images to create notes
• Find key pieces of evidence such as quotes, facts, statistics and
data to support your research
• You can glue in images and analyse them
• Make sure you account for more than one perspective
• This can be done by looking at the perspective of the country
allegedly committing the crimes and how do they see the
situation? Does this differ to the view from the
international community?
