INTRODUCTION
 Basically Links are paths used for establishing
communication.

 Satellite links are used to provide

communication over large distances.

 Types of satellite links:

 Uplink
 Downlink
 CrossLink
 Transponders
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION MODEL
EXAMPLE:
 Let’s consider an example of signals from a television. In
first stage, the signal from the television is broadcasted. On
the other side of the earth is first beamed up to the
satellite from the ground station on the earth. This process
is known as uplink.
 The second stage involves transponders such as radio
receivers, amplifiers, and transmitters. These transponders
are used for boosting the incoming signal and to change
their frequency so that the outgoing signals are not
altered. Depending on the incoming signal sources, the
transponders vary.
 The final stage involves a downlink in which the data is
sent to the other end of the receiver on the earth. It is
important to understand that usually there is one uplink
and multiple downlinks.
SATELLITE UPLINK MODEL
OPERATION:
 Baseband signal cannot
transmit over a radio
link and so require a
large antenna to radiate
low frequency
spectrum.So signal is
passed to modulator.
 Modulator converts
input baseband signal
either to fm,psk or QAM
signal.
 BPF transmits the higher
frequency signals.
 Mixer converts the IF
signal to RF signal.
 Band pass filter allows
a particulr range of
frequencies so here it
helps in eliminating
some unwanted
frequencies.
 HPA provides
adequate gain and
power to propagate
the signal to
transponder.
WHY 6GHZ?
 Communication link frequency from
transmitting station is in c-band and ku-
band whose transmitting frequency is 6GHz
and 14GHz.
 Ground temperature of earth which
contributes to thermal noise is large and so
frequency is increased to increase signal to
noise ratio.
 The beam of higher frequency is narrow.
Since the target is a small point(satellite)in
space so a narrow beam is used.
