EXPERT
Can you really test your knowledge of this work by creating your own grid for someone else to try? Make sure you make a
copy of your grid at the back of your book and record your answers there before anyone else tries it.

Factorising expressions

Factorising an expression is the opposite of expanding it.

Expanding or multiplying out

a (b + c) ab + ac

Factorising
Factorising expressions

Factorise 6a + 8 Factorise 12n – 9n 2

The highest common The highest common

factor of 6a and 8 is 2. factor of 12n and 9n 2 is 3n.

(6a + 8) ÷ 2 = 3a + 4 (12n – 9n 2) ÷ 3n = 4 – 3n

6a + 8 = 2(3a + 4) 12n – 9n 2 = 3n (4 – 3n)

Factorising expressions

Factorise 3x + x 2 Factorise 2p + 6p 2 – 4p 3

The highest common The highest common factor

factor of 3x and x 2 is x. of 2p, 6p 2 and 4p 3 is 2p.

(3x + x 2) ÷ x = 3 + x (2p + 6p 2 – 4p 3) ÷ 2p = 1 + 3p – 2p 2

3x + x 2 = x (3 + x) 2p + 6p 2 – 4p 3 = 2p (1 + 3p – 2p 2)
Factorisation

Factorise 40v – 45v2

40v – 45v 2 = 5v ( 8 – 9v)

Factorise 35t 5v + 14st 2

35t 5v + 14st 2 = 7t 2
( 5t 3 v + 2s)

Factorise 9kp + 12kt – 18k 2r

9kp + 12kt – 18k 2r = 3k (p + 4t – 6kr)

Substitution
One of the most important features of algebra is the use of
expressions and formulae, and the substitution of real numbers into
them.

The value of an expression, such as 3x + 2, changes when different

values of x are substituted into it.

For example,

the expression 3x + 2 has the value:

5 when x = 1 and 14 when x = 4.

When x= 1: 3x + 2 = 3 x 1 + 2 BIDMAS
= 5

When x= 4: 3x + 2 = 3 x 4 + 2
= 14
