Definition of Terms!
Communication – pertained to a purposeful exchange of
information and messages between people or groups of
people by speaking, writing, gestures, and signs.
Messages – refer to any form of communication
(information, feelings, and ideas) passed or transmitted
using a channel. Turow (2007) described them
(messages) as a collection of symbols that appear
purposefully organized (meaningful) to those sending or
receiving them.

Definition of Terms!
Media – are the methods or tools in which information
can be exchanged and communication can be facilitated.
Interpersonal Communication – refers to the
communication between two persons, whether they are
verbal or non – verbal.
Mediated interpersonal communication – refers to the
process where technology stands in between the parties
communicating and becomes the channel by which the
message is sent or received.

Mass communication – refers to communication
systems used to create, produce, and disseminate
media texts to mass audiences, traditional forms of
mass communication consist of newspaper, radio,
television, and film. It is also understood that in
mass communication, there is no immediate
feedback between the source and the receiver.

- It is the ability to access, analyze,
evaluate, and create media in a variety of
forms. It aims to empower citizens by
providing them with the competencies
(knowledge and skills) necessary to
engage with traditional media and new
technology.

What is Media Literacy?


- The ability to identify different types of media and
understand the messages they’re sending.
- But all media shares one thing: someone created
it, and it was created for a reason, understanding
that reason is the basis of media literacy.
- Media literacy is an essential skill in the digital

 Expands the concept of literacy, as today’s messages come
in many forms and literacy can no longer refer simply to the
ability to read and write.
 Offers a solution to public health issues, such as body
image issues and substance use, exacerbated by toxic
media messages.
 Empowers all people to engage in a global media
environment.

What is Information Literacy?


- Information literacy curriculum includes:
• Tool literacy – the ability to use print and electronic
resources including software.
• Resource literacy – the ability to understand the form,
format, location and access methods of information
resources.
• Social – structural literacy – knowledge of how
information is socially situated and produced. It includes
understanding the scholarly publishing process.

- Information literacy curriculum includes:
• Research literacy – the ability to understand
and use information technology tools to carry our
research including discipline – related software.

or multimedia report of the results of research.

What is Information Literacy?


- Most generally, Information literacy refers to a
cluster of competencies, including the ability:
• To recognize when you need information
• To understand the type of information you need
• To know how to search for information
• To interpret information, and
• To know how to use and cite information.

Examples:
a) Angela is a school journalist, and she wants to
write about the effectiveness of the vaccines for
the Covid 19, so she identifies, evaluate and use
information accurately.

Technology Literacy

It refers to the ability of an individual,


either working independently or with
others, to responsibly, appropriately,
and effectively use technological tools.
Using these tools an individual can
access, manage, integrate, evaluate,
create, and communicate information.

make a LAN port for connectivity and easy access to
the internet.

Media Literacy – the ability to read, analyze, evaluate and produce
communication in a variety of media.
Information literacy – the ability to recognize when information is
needed and to locate, evaluate, effectively use and communicate
information in its various formats.

communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use, and create
information.

information on your social media account. When
you are using applications and websites, read
first the “terms of use”
- it is wise to take a close look and read all the

- when posting or sharing on social media,
think first if the information you are going to post,
or share is accurate, helpful, informative, nice,
