1891 - 1892
Rizal (Ophthalmic Surgeon) in Hongkong

After the publication of El


Filibusterismo, Rizal left Europe for
Hongkong where he live from
November 1891 – June 1892.

His reasons for leaving Europe were:

 Life was unbearable in Europe because of his


political differences with M.H del Pilar and
other Filipinos in Spain

 To be near his idolized Philippines and Family


Farewell to europe

October 3, 1891- Rizal left Ghent for Paris


to say goodbye to the Lunas, the Pardo de
Taveras, the Ventuas and other friends.

He proceeded by train to Marseilles.

October 18, 1891- He boarded the streamer


Melbourne bound for Hongkong.

On his trip, he brought a letter of


recommendation by Juan Luna for Manuel
Camus, a compatriot living in Singapore, and
600 copies of the El Filibusterismo.

According to his writing to Bluementritt, the trip was “heavenly”

There were over 80 first class passengers

 Europeans
 Spaniards
 And Rizal being the only Asian among them

He befriended many missionaries

 Italian Franciscans
 French Jesuits
 A bishop
Rizal and the german ladies

During his trip to Hongkong, at dinner time,


passengers were having their meal. Rizal being
alone at one table. Near him was occupied by
some german ladies who were gaily eating and
gossiping about him, without even knowing
that Rizal can understand them.

Rizal arrived in Hongkong on November 20,


1891.

He was welcomed by the Filipino residents,


especially his old friend, Jose Basa.

He lived at 5 D’ Aguilar Street, where he also


established his Medical clinic.
Family reunion in hongkong

Before Christmas of 1891, His father, and


brother-in- law, Silvestre Ubaldo, not long
afterwards his mother, and sister Lucia, Josefa,
and Trinidad also arrived.

January 31, 1892- he wrote to bluementritt


recounting their pleasant life in Hongkong.

The Christmas of 1891 in hongkong was one of


the happiest yuletide celebration In Rizal’s life

To earn living for him and his family, he need to use his profession.

Dr. Lorenzo P. Marques- a friend and admirer him build up a wide


clientel.

Dr. Jose Rizal became a successful and well-known practitioner.

His patients are:

 British
 Chinese
 Portuguese
 Americans

He successfully operated on his mother’s left


eye so that she was able to read and write again.

Dr. Geminiano de Ocampo said that Rizal had


all the qualities that would make an ideal

 Ang Mga Karapatan Ng Tao- “the rights of man”


proclaimed by the French revolution in 1789

 A la Nacion Espanola- an appeal to Spain to right the


wrongs done to the Calamba Tenants

 Sa Mga Kababayan- “to my countrymen” He wrote this


on December 1891, this is about the calamba agrarian
situation.

 Una Visita a la Victoria Gaol ( a visit to Victoria Gaol)


– He wrote this on March 2, 1892, About his visit to
the colonial prison of Hongkong

 The Hongkong Telegraph- He contributed articles on


this british daily newspaper whose editor is his friend,
Mr. Frazier Smith.

 Constitution of the Liga Filipina- His most important


writing during his Hongkong Sojourn, printed in
1892.
