“LIFE – PROCESSES”
What Are Life Processes?

The processes which together perform the function of

maintenance of 'life' are called as life processes. Nutrition,
respiration, circulation, excretion are examples of
essential life processes.
Nutrition:
Nutrition is the process of intake of nutrients (like carbohydrates, fats,
proteins, minerals, vitamins and water) by an organism as well as the
utilization of these nutrients by the organism.

Mode of Nutrition:
Mode of nutrition means method of obtaining food by an organism. There are
mainly two modes of nutrition:
• Autotrophic mode of nutrition
• Heterotrophic mode of nutrition
Autotrophic Nutrition:-
• Autotrophic nutrition is that mode of nutrition in which an
organism makes (or synthesizes) its own food from the simple
inorganic materials like carbon dioxide and water present in the
surroundings (with the help of sunlight energy).

•Those organisms which can make their own food from carbon
dioxide and water are called autotrophs.
•Example: all green plants, autotrophic bacteria.
•Autotrophs make their food by photosynthesis
Heterotrophic Nutrition:-

Heterotrophic nutrition is a type of nutrition in which

organisms depend upon other organisms for food to
survive. Heterotrophic organisms have to take in all the
organic substances they need to survive. All animals, fungi,
and non-photosynthesizing plants are heterotrophic.
Nutrition In Human Beings:-

Human digestive system, system used in the human body for the

process of digestion. The human digestive system consists primarily of the
digestive tract, or the series of structures and organs through
which food and liquids pass during their processing into forms absorbable
into the bloodstream. The system also consists of the structures through
which wastes pass in the process of elimination and other organs that
contribute juices necessary for the digestive process.
Respiration:-

In physiology, respiration is the movement of oxygen from the

outside environment to the cells within tissues, and the transport
of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction.
Aerobic respiration :-

Aerobic Respiration: It is the process of

cellular respiration that takes place in the
presence of oxygen gas to produce energy
from food. This type of respiration is
common in most of the plants and animals, Human Respiratory System

birds, humans, and other mammals. In this

process, water and carbon dioxide are
produced as end products.
Anaerobic Respiration:-

It is a process which takes place in the absence of oxygen gas. In

this process, the energy is obtained by the breakdown of glucose
in the absence of oxygen. One of the best examples of anaerobic
respiration is the process of fermentation in yeast.
Transportation :-

The blood is responsible to transport food, oxygen, and waste

materials in human bodies. Blood usually consists of a fluid
medium known as plasma where the cells remain suspended.
Plasma is responsible to transport food, carbon dioxide, and
nitrogenous wastes in dissolved form.
Transportation In Human Beings:-
In human beings, the various organs associated with this system include the
heart, lungs, blood vessels, capillaries, and blood.  The heart is the pumping
organ that squirts out blood. The heart does this with so much pressure that it
is capable of squirting blood up to 9 meters high. It never stops and beats
continuously so that blood can travel to all parts of the body.

Your blood travels through these blood vessels transporting oxygen, carbon
dioxide, digested food, hormones and even waste products. It is amazing to
see how transportation in human beings is carried out by the circulatory
system, with the heart and the vast network of blood vessels.
Transportation In Plants:-

Plants have tissues to transport water, nutrients and minerals.

Xylem transports water and mineral salts from the roots up to
other parts of the plant, while phloem transports sucrose and
amino acids between the leaves and other parts of the plant.
Excretion :-

Excretion in Humans- Excretion is the process where all the

metabolic wastes are removed from the body. Excretion in
humans is carried through different body parts and internal
organs in a series of processes. Diffusion is the most common
process of excretion in lower organisms.
