FORMULATING A STATISTICAL

MINI-RESEARCH
Learning Objectives:
After going trough this WLAS, you, the learner, are expected to formulate
a statistical mini-research. Specially, you will be able to:

1. Creates a question
2. Identifies a sampling

method.
form of numerical data.

4. Organize the

data collected.
Key
Concepts

Survey – research is a process of conducting research used when the

researcher intends to provide a quantitative or numeric description of
trends, attitudes or opinions of populations. The data collected from the
survey is then statistically analyzed to draw meaningful research
conclusions.
Example
s:
1. You want to find out the most preferred P-pop Group ( Alamat,
BGYO, SB190) by your classmates.
2. You want to determine the most watched TV program in the
neighborhood.
3. What is the performance in mathematics among the G10 students in
Respondents or Participants are the individuals involved in the survey. They
are chosen through Sampling. They are also called as sample.
Sample (n) is the selection of participants for a research to represent the total
population (N).
Sampling is the formal process of choosing the correct sample from the
population to participate in the study or survey.

SLOVIN’S FORMULA
- is used to calculate the sample size (n) given the population
size (N) and a margin of error (e).

SLOVIN’S
FORMULA
n = N / (1 + Ne2)

n = sample size
N = population size
e = margin of
error
Step 1: Figure out what you want your confidence level
to be.

Confidence level of 95%

(Giving you an alpha level of 0.05)

100% - 95% = 5% or 0.05

Confidence level of 98% =

0.02
Step 2: Plug your data into the
formula.

In this example, we’ll use a 95% confidence level with a population size of
1,000.

Margin of error (e) =

0.05 N = 1,000
Step 3: Round your answer to a whole
number.
285.714286 = 286
