Statistical Analysis
What is Sampling?
• Systematic selection of individuals, units, or groups to
be analyzed during the conduct of the study
• Done to get information about the target population
• Thus, it is the goal in research to make sure that the
samples selected represent the target population
• Well done sampling increases the generalizability of
the findings
Suggested sample sizes in different
quantitative research design
Research Design Number of Participants
Survey 800
Correlational 100-200
Ex post facto >30
Experimental >30
Slovin’s Formula
Identify the appropriate sampling
method
• A store prints a request on each receipt asking customers to fill
out a satisfaction survey online if they are willing.
• A hospital wants to survey religious participants in their city
about what they seek from a hospital chaplain, so they
randomly select 555 religious meetings in the city and survey
every participant in those meetings.
• A researcher polls people as they walk by on the street.
• A manager associated each employee's name with a number
on one ball in a container, then drew balls without looking to
select a sample of 555 employees.
• A school chooses 333 randomly selected athletes from
each of its sports teams to participate in a survey about
athletics at the school.
• Employees at a website want to select a sample of their
users to ask for a donation. They randomly select one
of the first 25 user each day and show them a message
asking for a donation. They also show the message to
every 25th user from that point on.
• A support hotline asks callers to stay on the line after
they have completed their call to respond to a short
survey.
