Median
 Median
The median is the middle value in the set of data
arranged in increasing or decreasing order. It splits the
distribution into halves where 50% of the scores lie
above the median and 50% lie below it. The median of
the odd number of scores/items is the middle number
when the scores/items are arranged in order of
magnitude. If the number of scores is even, the median
is determined by computing the average of the two
middle numbers. The median is denoted by the
symbol, 𝒙̃, read as “𝑥 tilde.”
Example 1
What is the median score given Rodley’s score?
8, 7, 10, 7, 12, 11, 8
First, let us arrange the scores from lowest to highest.

Example 2
Find the median in the set of scores: 84, 96, 71, 82, 67, and
92
First we arrange the given scores from lowest to highest. Since there are six
scores, the middle scores are 82 and 84.

67, 71, 82 , 84 , 92, 96

We get the average of 82 and 84

82+84/ 2 = 166/ 2 = 83. Hence, the median score is 83 or 𝑥̃ = 83.

The mode is the most frequently occurring
score. The symbol denotes the mode, 𝒙̂, read
as “𝑥 hat.”
