SCUBA DIVING
an underwater swimming activity involving
the use of self-contained underwater
breathing apparatus (SCUBA)

HISTORY OF
SCUBA DIVING
Scuba diving is a sport that had its humble beginnings
in ancient times. In early Greece and Rome, people used
to swim or dive while holding their breath or by using
makeshift breathing apparatuses like hollow plant
stems. This was commonly practiced during combat or
while gathering food and materials from the ocean.
The first snorkel used by ancient swimmers were hollow
reeds that allowed them to breathe underwater

RULES OF
SCUBA DIVING
1. Breathe continuously while on scuba . Never hold your breath.
holding your breath when you change depth, even a little, could cause an overexpansion of your lung. If that happen the
symptoms are short breath, difficulty of breathing, pain, unconsciousness

2. Equalise early and often while descending .Never go deeper that you can comfortably equalise .
risk to burst an ear drum

3. Ascend slowyly from every dive and make safety stops.

reduce decompression sickness risk & let time for that excess nitrogen to escape your body

4. Continuously monitor depth, time and pressure.

common accidents happen when you run out of air at depth

5. Don’t overweight yourself

not good for you back, it’s danger when you can’t inflate your BC
(buoyancy compensator)

6. Dive like a fish and not like an ape

SCUBA DIVING
EQUIPMENT & GEAR
1.diving mask & snorkel

- diving mask (create air space in front of your eyes to let you see clearly
underwater)

- snorkel (help to save the air in your tank) ps//optional, normally suggested for
beginners to carry one

2. wetsuit or drysuit (as an incubator to keep you warm)

- use wetsuit when diving in warmer water- use drysuit when diving in colder
water

3. scuba gloves

- help to keep your hands warm underwater

- prevent skin injuries when you explore difficult underwater environments

4. fins (let you move through the water seamlessly without wasting too much
energy)

- open heel (used in cold water)

- full-foot (used in warmer water) ALPINE SKI HOUSE

SCUBA DIVING EQUIPMENT AND GEAR:
5. scuba tank (stores large volumes of air)
- allowing you to breath underwater

6. Regulator
- first stage (connect your scuba tank and move air from the tank when you inhale)

- second stage (what you put in your mouth to breath from)

7. depth gauge submersible pressure gauge (SPG) & compass

-depth gauge (pecifies the current and maximum depth reached during a dive)

- spg (show how much remaining air you have in your scuba tank)

- compass (helps you navigate underwater)

8. dive computermonitors:
the duration of your dive

- the depth you are at

- how much longer you can safely stay at depth

ALPINE SKI HOUSE
- track how much air you have left
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF SCUBA DIVING?

Drowning Decompression Sickness

• diver panic • When you breathe compressed air at depth, your body
tissues will absorb extra nitrogen
• You should not dive unless you have a clean bill of
health. You should consult a physician with knowledge • When you resurface, if your tissues have absorbed too
in diving medicine if you have any cardiac or much nitrogen, the reduction in pressure can cause that
respiratory conditions, or any other condition that may nitrogen to create nitrogen bubbles inside your tissues
affect your diving
• causes a lot of pain, and, if untreated, and result in nerve
and other tissue damage, and even death

Scuba diving involves some inherent risks, and because of these risks it requires special training. In fact,
ethical dive shops will not sell or rent equipment to someone who does not hold a certification from a
recognized agency. When you arrive at a dive operator’s shop to go on a dive, they will require you to
show your certification card and, occasionally, a log showing how many dives you have completed.

WHY IS SCUBA
DIVING POPULAR?
Scuba diving allows you to move freely
underwater and makes you feel you are
part of the marine life. Another great thing
is that diving is the closest thing to flying.
Hardly having to deal with gravity makes
you feel like you're weightless and flying
into the blue.
