Introduction to
Writing Skills
So, what do I write?

People write for different


reasons or purposes.
These purposes can be
grouped under types of
writing.
Writing Purposes (Author):
To express and reflect
To inform and explain
To persuade
To create a literary work
To evaluate and judge
To inquire and explore
To analyze and interpret
To take a Stand and Propose a Solution.
Writing Purposes (Audience):

The purpose of your paper is the reason you


are writing your paper (convince, inform, instruct,
analyze, review, etc). The audience of your paper are
those who will read what you write.
How important is audience in writing?

Knowing your audience helps you to make


decisions about what information you should include,
how you should arrange that information, and what
kind of supporting details will be necessary for the
reader to understand what you are presenting.
Steps of Writing

STEPS OF THE WRITING PROCESS:


 STEP 1: PREWRITING. THINK AND DECIDE. Make sure
you understand your assignment.
 STEP 2: RESEARCH (IF NEEDED). SEARCH. List places
where you can find information.
 STEP 3: DRAFTING. WRITE.

 STEP 4: REVISING. MAKE IT BETTER.

 STEP 5: EDITING AND PROOFREADING. MAKE IT


CORRECT.
Types of Writing
Narrative
Descriptive
Expository
Persuasive
Argumentative
Narrative Writing

recounts a personal experience


in the form of a story and
always includes characters,
setting, and plot
Examples: short story, novel,
narrative poem, journal
Descriptive Writing

uses vivid images to describe


a person, place, or event so
that the topic can be clearly
“seen” in the reader’s mind.
Examples: menu, travel
brochure, poster
Expository Writing

 provides information that


explains, clarifies, or defines
Examples: essay, research
paper, report, manual
Persuasive Writing

gives an opinion using facts


that attempts to convince a
reader to agree with a writer’s
belief.
Examples: movie review,
restaurant critique, letter to a
newspaper editor, essay.
Argumentative Writing

a research paper that takes a position


on a controversial issue and tries to
present evidence in favor of that
position.
Example: A teenage girl presents
an argument to her parents regarding
why she needs a cell phone that will
allow her to text and use the internet.
Creative Writing

entertains the reader


Examples: short story, novel,
poem, play
