Art

the style of a western and classical art.
• 2. I can identify distinct characteristics of arts during the different art periods.
• 3. I can identify representative artists from Renaissance and Baroque periods
• 4. I can compare the characteristics of artworks produced in the different art
periods.
• 5. I can create artworks guided by techniques and styles of Western Classical
art traditions.
• 6. I can apply different media techniques and processes to communicate ideas,
experiences, and stories showing the characteristics of the Renaissance and the
Baroque periods (e.g.,Fresco, Sfumato, etc.)
In our first quarter module in Arts, we discussed
the different artworks of Western and Classical
art traditions. We also discussed the different
styles that artists applied in creating an
extraordinary artworks. For this quarter, we are
going to explore the different artworks during
Renaissance and Baroque Period. We are also
going to identify the famous artists and their
artworks that are extremely beautiful
Renaissance Period
Renaissance comes from the word, renaitre,
which means, rebirth. Arts of the Renaissance
period covers artworks produced during the
14th, 15th, and 16th centuries in Europe.
Renaissance also means discovery of the
ancient Roman Empire, which awakened the
interest in Classical ideals of beauty and
thought.
Renaissance pertains to arts, particularly
in Italy, such as sculptures, paintings,
music, architecture, and literature. The
most common subject of this period is
human philosophy. Famous artists of this
era were, At this point, let us discuss the
life and some of their artwork.
Michelangelo (11475-
1564)
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in
Caprese, a village in Italy, in 1475. He
began to train as a painter at the age of
13. He was an artist of extraordinary
ability. He is known primarily as an
outstanding painter and sculptor, but he
was also an accomplished architect and
poet. His extraordinary accomplishments
in painting, sculpture and architecture
made him one of the outstanding figures
in Renaissance art.
Pieta is one of the greatest artworks of
Michelangelo. The pieta shows Christ in his
mother’s lap, just after he is taken down
from the cross.

Leonardo Da Vinci
(1452-1519)
He was born in 1452 in the small town of
Vinci, near Florence, Italy. He had little
schooling and was largely self-taught. He
was a pinter, sculptor architect, engineer,
and scientist. He was known not only as a
masterful painter but as an architect. His
pursuit of knowledge was relentless, and
his discoveries left lasting changes in the
fields of art and science. He was
quintessential Renaissance man. He also
apply the technique in painting the

Raphael (1483-1520)

Rafaello Santi was born in Urbino on April


6, 1483. He is considered to be one of the
greatest and most popular artist of all
time. he received his early training in art
from his father. The painter Giovanni Santi.
Being younger, Raphael was considered
during his time as the next master painter
to inherit the fame of Leonardo Da Vinci.
The “The Transfiguration” was
Raphael’s last painting on which
he worked on up to his death.

Donatello (1386-
1466)
Donatello di Niccolo di Berto
Berdi, known as Donatello,
was the greatest sculptor of
the early Renaissance. He was
a master stonecutter. In
addition, he also had a great
understanding of human
behavior as shown in his work
titles The Penitent Magdalene.
Customarily portrayed as a beautiful young
woman with long lovely hair, Donatello’s
Mary Magdalene is different. His Mary
Magdalene is a semi-toothless, old woman
with tangled hair. The expressive sculpture
shows the repentant Magdalene as a
haggard old woman.

Baroque Period
Baroque art is the style that dominated the art of
Europe and some Spanish and Portuguese
settlements in the Americas during the 16th
century until 1750. The term baroque was derived
from the Portuguese word “barocco” which
means “irregular shaped pearl or stone”. Baroque
art is also referred to as the Age of Expansion. This
is an age of genius in many fields of endeavor. It
was a period of artistic style in exaggerated
motion, drama, tension, and grandeur.
Michaelangelo Merisi
da Caravaggio (1573 -
1610)
• He was an orphaned child. His
paintings combined a realistic
observation of the human state
with dramatic use of the
chiaroscuro. He painted biblical
stories as if they were taking
place in the present day. He
focused on the poverty and
humanity of Christ and his
followers emphasizing their
ragged clothing
The painting depicts a
crown of thorns being
forced onto the head of
Jesus before his
crucifixion, to mock his
claim to authority.

Peter Paul Rubens
(1577-1640)
• He is known for his painting style that
stressed movement, color, and
sensuality. He is known for depicting
women as soft-bodies and passive as
shown in his various nude paintings of
biblical and mythological women which
highlighted the concepts of fertility,
desire, physical beauty, and virtue. He
also portrayed men as powerful, capable,
forceful, and compelling which
allegorically referred to male dominance.

Diego Rodriguez de
Silva y Velasquez
(1599-1660)
He was an important portrait artist of
the contemporary Baroque period.
He painted many portraits if famous
figures at the time, as well as
commoners, in addition to numerous
scenes of historical and cultural
significance. Several of his works
have been recreated by other famous
artists including Pablo Picasso and
Salvador Dali.

Rembrandt
Harmenszoon van Rijn
(1606-1669)
He is considered as one of the
greatest visual artist in art history
and the most important in Dutch
art. he painted portraits, self-
protraits, landscapes, genre
scnes, allegorical and historical
scenes, and biblical and
mythological themes as well as
animal studies.
Depicts the Biblical story
of the prodigal son at the
moment he returns to
his father, regretting his
sins and begging for
forgiveness.
