Watch the Video
How are they
formed?

Volcanoes are formed

when magma from
beneath Earth’s surface
pushes through Earth’s
crust along tectonic
boundaries or hotspot.
How many types of volcanoes are there?
Stratovolcanoes- Tall
Steep Mountains
Shield Volcanoes-
Flatter and Dome Shaped Stratovolcano
Shield Volcano
Calderas Volcanoes-
Large depressions in
the ground
Mid Ocean Ridges-
Calderas Volcano
Underwater Volcanoes
Mid Ocean Ridge
How are volcanoes classified?
Volcanoes are classified as:
● Active: Erupting or Likely to Erupt
● Dormant: Inactive but may erupt in the future
● Extinct: Unlikely to erupt again.

Kīlauea In Hawaii Mt Kilimanjaro in Mt Buninyong in

is Active and Tanzania, Africa, Victoria, Australia,
currently erupting is dormant is Extinct
Where are Volcanoes Located?
● Volcanoes form
where tectonic
plates meet
● “Ring of Fire”-
where many
tectonic plates
meet- contain 75%
of the planets
volcanoes.

Tectonic Plates: The earth's crust is made up of HUGH

tectonic plate- like a puzzle. These plates are always
moving and sometimes collide making mountains and volcanoes.
What happens when volcanoes erupt?
Volcanic eruptions can completely destroy the surrounding area.

There are two types of volcano eruptions:

1. Effusive Eruption = When magma flows out as lava.

2. Explosive Eruption = When magma full of gas reaches the
surface OR when magma reacts with water to create a steam
blast.

Volcanic bombs= Sometimes powerful eruptions can launch large

rocks into the air

Pyroclastic Flow = avalanche of hot gas and rock

Why are they important?
● Volcanoes are destructive but they are also vital to the earth
and the environment.
● Ash from volcanoes provides nutrients to soil
● Lava when it cools hardens into rock and makes new
landforms.
What is the impact of volcanoes on people?
