RATIONAL FUNCTIONS

Objectives:
1. define a rational function
2. determine the meaningless value/s of the function
3. solve rational equations and inequalities
4. find domain and range of rational functions
Definition of Rational Function

A rational function, r(x) is a function of the form

r(x) =
where p(x) and q(x) are polynomial functions and q(x)
Examples of Rational Functions

1. f(x) = 2. g(x)=
3. m(x)= 4. l(x)=
5. h(x)=
Determine the value/s of x that is/are
meaningless

1. f(x) = 2. g(x)=
3. m(x)= 4. l(x)=
5. h(x)=
Determine the value/s of x that is/are
meaningless

1. f(x) = Ans. X=-2 2. g(x)= Ans. X=0

3. m(x)= Ans. X= 2 4. l(x)= Ans. X=
5. h(x)= Ans. none
To find the value/s of x that makes the function
meaningless, equate the denominator to zero, then
solve for the equation.

r(x) =

Solving Rational Equations and Inequalities

Solve each equation. Check extraneous solutions. Write your answer in interval notation
for rational inequalities.

1. - = 3. 1

2. = 4. <
Steps in Solving Rational Equations

1. Find the Least common Denominator (LCD).

2. Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD.
3. Apply the Distributive Property and then simplify.
4. Find all the possible values of x.
5. Check each value by substituting into rational equation and
reject any extraneous root/s.
Steps in Solving Rational Inequalities
1. Put the rational inequality in general form.
> 0, where > can be replaced by <,
2. Write the inequality into a single rational expression on the left side.
3. Set the numerator and denominator equal to zero and solve. The values you get are
the critical values.
4. Plot the critical values on a number line, breaking the number line into intervals.
5. Substitute critical values to the inequality to determine if the endpoints of the
intervals in the solution should be included or not.
6. Select test values in each interval and substitute those values into the inequality.
7. Use interval notation or set notation to write the final answer.

7. Use interval notation or set notation to write the final answer.
Finding the Domain and Range of
Rational Functions

To find the domain, find the value of the denominator that will
make the function meaningless and write in set notation or set
builder notation.
Example: 1. g(x)= , the meaningless value is x=0.
So, D= { x/x, x
or D = (-
Finding the Domain and Range of
Rational Functions

To find the range, interchange the x and y variables, then solve for x.
Find the value/s that will make the denominator meaningless. Write
in set notation or set builder notation.
Example: 1. g(x)= , let g(x) =y , so it will become y= ,
then interchange x and y variables ; x=
solve for x; x=
find the value of the denominator which will make meaningless; 2y= 0 y =0
Finding the Domain and Range of
Rational Functions

Write the range in set builder notation or set notation.

R= { y/y, y or R = (-
Finding the Domain and Range of
Rational Functions

Example: 2. l(x)= , the meaningless value of the

denominator are x =.
So, D= { x/x, x
or D = (-

solve for x; x- x =
x(-1) =
Finding the Domain and Range of
Rational Functions
Solve for x; x(-1) =
x=
Since the denominator is , then equating it to zero,
Solving for y- values, = 1
=
= 1
So, R= { y/y, y
or D = (-
