Sulpher dye:-

The dyes are so called as they contair sulpher linkage their

molecular structure but disslove in a Soln of Na- Sulphide which

acts as a reducing agent breaking the Sulpher linkage and

converting the molecules into simple componets which are soluble

in water and substantive towards cellose.

Dye-S-S-Dye.
Chemistry of dyeing with S- dyes or mechanism
of dyeing:-

 The sulpher dyes contain sulpher in

linkage within their moleculers. They are
Insoluble in water but can be reduced to
become soluble in water by reating with
reducing agents and shows substantivity
towards cellose.
 Sodium sulphide acts as reducing agent
thatbreaks the sulpher linkage and break
down the molecules into simpler components
which can easily penetrate the fabric Surface.
Dye –s-s Dye + + 2 (H) Dye SH+HS+ Dye
 The thiols, containing the - SH
groups are readily oxidised in the
fibre to the original insoluble
sulpher dyes by oxidizing agent gives
a colour with very good wet fastness
properly.
Application of sulpher dyes:-
Where boil fastness is not very important but a good
wash is important of dull brown, khaki color
clothes, sulphur Dyes are used. The most friendly
sulphur dye among all the members of the sulphur
acid dyes family sulphur Black. It shows affinity for line
n and jute fibers. It works excellent with the black
color and gives excellent color and light fastness.
Sulphide Dyes are dyes from a dye
bath containing common salts and So
dium Sulphide. This mixture is
oxidized with some oxidizing agents in
 a fresh
bath. The oxidizing agents are Sodium
bi-chromate and  Hydrogen Peroxide.
These Dyes are used for Jigger, Winch
and for package dyeing of Cotton and Visc
ose‐rayon. These dyes
are economically beneficial if used for con
tinuous basic.
Disadvantage/ Defects' of Sulpher dye:-

Mainly two defects which are common in

sulpher dyeing.
1.Brounziness or, dullness of shades.
9.Tendering.
Advantage:-
 Low cost.
 High wash fastness.
 Easy to apply.
 Low energy required.
 wet fastness good.
Conclusion:-
• We know that what is sulpher dye, what is the
mechanism of sulpher dye. Application of
sulpher dyes.
