Motion

1. Define momentum? 4. Draw the Momentum Triangle and the formulas.

Momentum is the movement of an object P (kg m/s) = m (kg) x v (m/s)

which can vary in strength depending how m (kg) = P (kg m/s) / v (m/s)
fast or slow the object is moving.
v (m/s) = P (kg m/s) / m (kg)
2. Explain ‘The Conservation of Momentum’? 5. A car with a mass of 2560 kg is moving at a velocity
of 25 m/s. Calculate its momentum.

‘For an isolated system the total momentum

does not change during a collision’
P=mxv
3. What is the difference in the individual momenta and
total momentum in a collision?
P = 2560 x 25
When two objects interact with each other, the forces they
exert on each other cause changes in their individual
momenta. However, the total momentum of the system
P = 64000 kg m/s
(the combination of both objects) remains the same.
