Describing position and motion

Position of an object
Activity
• Ask a student to identify his position in the
class.
1st student :- I am the front of the board

2nd student :- I am beside the class door

3rd student :- I am close to the window

Position of an object
What is position?
It is the measure of where the object is at a particular time
with respect to some reference points
SI unit of position is Meter (m), Km, Inches and miles
Displacement
It is the change in position of an object.
Distance traveled
It is the total length of the path travelled between
two positions.

study the following example on the next slide

Problem
The difference between displacement and distance
Scalar quantity and vector quantity.

Scalar Quantity
it is a quantity with a magnitude or size but no definite
direction.
Time – Position – Temperature – Density
- Do we need to identify the direction for them?
Scalar quantity and vector quantity.
Vector Quantity
It is a quantity with both magnitude and direction

Representing vectors can be by

1- Using arrow
.2- The length of the arrow indicates its magnitude
3- The head of the arrow indicates its direction.
4- A vector can be represented mathematically as a set (group) of components
A vector component
It is a projection of a vector quantity along an axis in a
coordinate system.

When representing a component,

We use X to represent horizontal motion, and we use Y to
represent vertical motion
