The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), also

minimum wages are to be paid. If work is not provided within 15 days of applying,
applicants are entitled to an unemployment allowance. Thus, employment under
MGNREGA is a legal entitlement

Another aim of NREGA is to create durable assets such as roads, canals, ponds, wells

MGNREGA is to be implemented mainly by gram panchayats. The involvement of

contractors is banned.

Apart from providing economic security and creating rural assets, NREGA can help in
protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and
fostering social equity, among others.

PRADHAN MANTRI GRAMODAYA YOJANA
The Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana was launched in 2000-
2001 to improve the quality of life of people living in rural areas.
The focus was on five crucial developments i.e., Primary
Education, Better Rural Roads, Clean Drinking Water, Primary
Health, and Nutrition. And Rural Electrification as well but that
was added in 2001-2002. The main objective of these
components was to eradicate poverty and give these people a
better life. In the last decade, there has been considerable
progress in the villages, such as easy access to primary health
care, education, safe and clean drinking water, and many other
factors that have been developed in the village areas.
The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana is a plan for the rural
areas in India to provide the right roads and connect
unconnected villages with a population of more than 500.

NATIONAL FOOD FOR WORK PROGRAMME
National Food for Work Programme was launched in 14th
November 2004 in 150 most backward districts of the country,
identified by the Planning Commission in consultation with the
Ministry of Rural Development and the State Governments.
About 20 lakh metric ton of food grains and Rs. 2020 crore were
allocated for the programme during 2004-2005.

The objective of the programme was to provide additional resources apart from the resources
available under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) to 150 most backward districts of the
country so that generation of supplementary wage employment and providing food security through
creation of need based economic, social and community assets in these districts are further
intensified.
The scheme was 100% centrally sponsored. The programme has since been subsumed in NREGA
which has come in force in 200 identified districts of the country including 150 NFFWP districts. The
Act provides 100 days of work guarantee to every rural household whose members volunteer to do
unskilled manual work. Food grains are provided free of cost to the states. States are supposed to
cover transportation costs, handling charges and taxes.
ANTYODAYA ANNA YOJANA
Antyodaya Anna Yojana is the sponsored scheme of
Government of India to provide highly subsidised
food to millions of the poorest families. This scheme
was developed by the the Union Food and Civil
Supplies Minister, Shanta Kumar. It was launched by
the NDA government on 25 December 2000 and first
implemented in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

After identifying the "poorest of the poor" (the 10,000,000 poorest families in the Below
Poverty Line category) through surveying, the government began providing them an
opportunity to purchase up to 35 kilograms of rice and wheat at a highly subsidised cost of
₹3 per kilogram of rice and ₹2 per kilogram of wheat. Poor families were identified by their
respective state rural development facilities through the use of surveys. The scheme has
been expanded twice, once in June 2003 and then in August 2004, adding an additional
5,000,000 BPL families each time and bringing the total number of families covered up to
20,000,000, after this additional 50 lakh families were added in 2003. Once a family has been
recognized as eligible, they are given a unique "Antyodaya Ration Card". The color of the
card is yellow.
