Dimensions of the SELF

The word self is popularly and generally


defined as what an individual sees,
perceives, and defines oneself apart from
others.
In other words,

 Our own description of how we see ourselves


3 Dimensions of the SELF

1. Physical: its process, functions, mechanisms,


and chemistry
2. Psychological: concepts of stress, cognition,
behavior, attitude, emotion, personality
3. Spiritual: it cannot be observed but
subjectively altered and perceived by the
person ( existence of God, greater good or of
superior being)

Attitude

-a key factor in personality development


A settled way of thinking and feeling about
someone or something, typically reflecting in
a person’s behavior
ATTITUDE BEHAVIOR

- Attitude manifests itself in behavior as a


representative of personality
Implicit and Explicit

Implicit (implied) – thoughts or feelings that


conscious awareness does not cover
Example: A version of an Implicit Attitudes Test
(IAT) has participants make the split-second
decision whether to “shoot” intruders in a video
game based on whether or not they are holding a
gun; many people exhibit an implicit bias toward
blacks, manifested as faster and more frequent
decisions to “shoot” when the intruder pictured is
a black man.
Explicit (open, clear) – can be perceived
consciously and expressed accordingly
 A person’s conscious views toward people,
objects, or concepts. That is, the person is aware
of the feelings he or she holds in a certain
context.
 Example: His grandfather is unapologetically
racist; the man makes no attempt to hide his
negative views toward members of various ethnic
minorities.
Attitudes and Its Components: Affect,
Behavior, Cognition

1. Affect – feel, emotion

Example: I am scared of spiders


2. Behavioral - act, behave towards object or
subject
Example: I will avoid spiders

3. Cognitive: beliefs, knowledge


Example: I believe spiders are dangerous
Analyze (component of ABC)

1. I love basketball because I get to know how


to focus and I believe it helps me to be
healthy. I will go to the gym once a week.
2. I am frightful of snakes and believe they are
poisonous so I will be in my room.
Self-concept and Self-Esteem

Self-concept is our cognition to ourselves.


What we think, know about our identity,
personality, individuality
It requires a lot of self-evaluation and
reflection
Examples

 My vocation is leading me to serve God

Is related to self-concept but it is different


It does not focus on how we know ourselves
but rather our attitude towards ourselves
It is a more situational approach, how we
value ourselves

How attitudes are formed?

1. Social factors: parents, elders, peers,


upbringing
2. Learning: commercials or advertisements,
3. Operant conditioning: alcohol consumption
and the headache/hangover
4. Modelling: a person we admire or adore, a
parent does something like parents loved
playing musical instruments
Take Note

Attitude is a permanent factor in


personality. If you know how it is created,
you can know how to handle it especially
when you need to.
It is a matter of self- monitoring and self-
evaluation.
IN SUMMARY

The self has 3 dimensions – physical,


psychological, and spiritual
Attitude composes of affect, behavior, and
cognition
Attitude can occur in our awareness or off
our ourselves – explicitly or implicitly
Attitude can be shaped through various ways
such as learning, experience, or conditioning
Self- esteem and self-concept are two different
concepts. Self-esteem is how you feel for
yourself while self-concept is what you think
of yourself
