Our Covenant in

CFC
SPEAKER
In CFC we encounter the word
“COVENANT”
Covenant of the
COUPLES FOR CHRIST
Old Testament
and the
New Testament
By virtue of BAPTISM.
A commitment of
loyalty, unity, and service.
What is a COVENANT?
Is a solemn agreement between parties through which they
commit themselves to certain relationships, tasks, obligations or
ways of living.
Two types of covenant relationships.

Between parties
Between parties equal
unequal in power and
in power and position.
position.
Bound in a personal way.
God with Abraham
Genesis 15
Laban and Jacob
Genesis 31:44 54
Some important basic truths from the
Old Testament.
COVENANT
treaty or contract which established a
relationship between two parties and
bound them together.
A lasting relationship.
Through the covenant, God and
His people are joined together.
The covenant was not a treaty
between equals, but between a
mighty person and a lesser person.
The contents of the covenant.
Introduction to Ten Commandments.
Deuteronomy 5:6 and
Exodus 20:2

I am the Lord your God, who brought you
out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of
slavery.
Our covenant with God is based on what
He has done for us, and only secondarily
on what we do in response.
Deuteronomy 5: 7-21

You shall not have other gods beside me. You shall not make for yourself an idol or a likeness of anything in the heavens above or on
the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or serve them. For I, the Lord, your God, am
a jealous God, bringing punishment for their parents’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth
generation, but showing love down to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not
invoke the name of the Lord, your God, in vain. For the Lord will not leave unpunished anyone who invokes his name in vain.
Observe the sabbath day—keep it holy, as the Lord, your God, commanded you. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but
the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work, either you, your son or your daughter, your male or
female slave, your ox or donkey or any work animal, or the resident alien within your gates, so that your male and female slave may
rest as you do. Remember that you too were once slaves in the land of Egypt, and the Lord, your God, brought you out from there
with a strong hand and outstretched arm. That is why the Lord, your God, has commanded you to observe the sabbath day. Honor
your father and your mother, as the Lord, your God, has commanded you, that you may have a long life and that you may prosper in
the land the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit
adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear dishonest witness against your
neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not desire your
neighbor’s house or field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything
that belongs to your neighbor.
Breaking God’s commandments =
Breaking our relationship with Him.
Being faithful = blessings,
Promised Land.
New Testament teaching
Jesus came to bring about a new
covenant.
Luke 22:20

And likewise the cup after they had eaten,

saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my
blood, which will be shed for you.
John 6:56

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood

remains in me and I in him.
Entering into a living relationship
with Jesus.
1 John 4:19

We love because he first loved us.

A new commandment of love.
John 13:15, 34

I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have

done for you, you should also do. I give you a new
commandment: love one another. As I have loved
you, so you also should love one another.
Our Response
John 13:34-35

I give you a new commandment: love one

another. As I have loved you, so you also should
love one another. This is how all will know that
you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.”
New Testament distinguishes
between love for those who are not
Christians and the covenant love of
Christian brethren.
Galatians 6:10

So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do

good to all, but especially to those who belong to
the family of the faith.
Many Christian groups are
unsuccessful because:
• Their models are secular in nature.

• Relationships are not based on a covenant.

• No authority to oversee the relationships.

• No common life, no significant relationships within the

body.

relationships.
