Objective
At the end of this lesson the student’s should
be able to;

• Define the Importance of People and

Agriculture.
• Interpret the Positive Effect of Agriculture
on the Environment.
• Organize the Impact of Agriculture in the
Society.
Agriculture is the art and science
of cultivating the soil, growing
crops and raising livestock. It
includes the preparation of plant
and animal products for people to
use and their distribution to
markets.
Start of Agriculture

Before agriculture became

widespread, people spent most
of their lives searching for food
hunting wild animals and
gathering wild plants.
Agricultural Science
Farmers have used a variety of
methods to protect their crops from
pests and diseases. They have put
herb-based poisons on crops,
handpicked insects off plants, bred
strong varieties of crops, and
rotated crops to control insects.
Positive Effects of Agriculture
on the Environment
Agriculture creates habitats
Agricultural systems that work
in harmony with nature such as
organic, permaculture, or
biodynamic farming create
diverse natural habitats.
Agriculture boosts soil fertility

Practices such as crop rotation, cover

cropping, no-tillage and the application
of compost, improve soil fertility
naturally and can even speed up the
process of new topsoil formation.
Agriculture retains soil and prevents erosion

Loss of soils is one of the

biggest threats to our wellbeing,
and intensive agriculture with
monoculture fields is known to
be one of its main contributors.
Agriculture has a role in the water cycle
Plants and trees in agricultural systems
help to retain and add water to
underground aquifers. This process is
most effective when the crops being
grown are perennials that continue to
grow every year and have deep, well-
established root systems.
