Week 5
WHAT IS CURRENT?
Current is a flow of electrical charge
carriers, usually electrons or electron-
deficient atoms.
The common symbol for current is the uppercase letter
I. The standard unit is the ampere, symbolized by A.
One ampere of current represents one coulomb of
electrical charge (6.24 x 1018 charge carriers) moving
past a specific point in one second. Physicists consider
current to flow from relatively positive points to
relatively negative points; this is called conventional
current or Franklin current. Electrons, the most
common charge carriers, are negatively charged. They
flow from relatively negative points to relatively
positive points.
Distinguish between conventional current and
electron flow.

The flow of electrons is termed electron current.

Electrons flow from the negative terminal to the
positive. Conventional current or simply current,
behaves as if positive charge carriers cause
current flow. Conventional current flows from the
positive terminal to the negative.
Rate of motion of charges
A steady current of .50 A in a flashlight bulb for 2 minutes. How much
charge passes through the bulb during this time? How many electrons
Does this represent?

With the equation I = , q = I t (0. 50A)(1.2 X s) = 60 C

With q= 60 C, using q= ne

n= = = 3.8 x =electrons
WHAT IS RESISTANCE?
Resistance- An analogy would be the size of the water pipes
and the size of the faucet. The larger the pipe and the faucet
(less resistance), the more water that comes out! The smaller
the pipe and faucet, (more resistance), the less water that
comes out! This can be thought of as resistance to the flow of
the water current.
All three of these: voltage, current and resistance directly
interact in Ohm's law.
Change any two of them and you affect the third.
