▰ Many countries, created a surveillance that will combat these

crimes. In most cases, people only get to hear about how this
measure will supposedly help the police to catch terrorists
and criminals, or at the very least, discourage prank calls and
spam text messages (Jacob, 2018).

Perceptions of Telecommunication Companies

▰ Other stated reasons for the growth of SIM registration are economic and
regulatory. The International Telecommunication Union in 2007 recommended
SIM registration to improve statistical accuracy on the mobile market as well as to
reduce access to grey market phones (TeleGeography, 2013)

Infraction of the Law to Right of Privacy

▰ Furthermore, the local and situated values and practices around ownership, identity,
exploitation, and security and safety concerns challenged the biometric registration
program. An online survey revealed substantial dissatisfaction with the biometric SIM
registration process. The participants expressed their fear of political exploitation,
commercial use, and invasion into their privacy (Ahmed, 2017).

Advantages and Challenges of SIM Card Registration

▰ The advantages for mandatory SIM card registration are the ability to track lost or stolen
mobile phones, law enforcement agents may track crimes conducted using mobile phones
(Jentzsch, 2012; Donavan & Martin, 2014).
