Critical analysisRT
of house in terms of
sustainability and environmental
conditions

Presented by:
Aiman Malik
Functional
Level
At the functional level, the analysis is
performed to determine whether the
building is self-sufficient enough to
create a suitable atmosphere for the
residents because it will be a place
where people will live and grow.

It is vital that the building be

sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and
serve as a unit of social space.
House
•Data
Location
The house is situated in Punjab University Employees
Housing Society, Town-1. It is located near U.C.L on
Abdul Sattar Edhi Road, Lahore.

• Neighborhood Context
The house is surrounded by residencies on north and
east sides. On the south side there is an empty plot
and on the west side there is a street.

Orientation

The building has a west facing front façade which is

not desirable in hot areas like Lahore. Bedrooms are
placed on the east which becomes overheated in
summers during daytime. The most used area that is
living room, its windows are west facing which makes it
unhabitable during the summers and provide
sufficient sunlight in winters. Moreover, kitchen
windows are south facing which allows sufficient
sunlight to enter during daytime and makes it easier
to work. Windows in the lobby of ground floor and in
the stairs makes them well lit. One bedroom and
drawing room on the north are comparitively cooler in
summer days than other rooms due to their north
facing windows.
The house has windows in all orientations and they are
not treated well with appropriate shading devices.
The terrace, porch and lawn are situated on the west
side which receives enough sunlight.
• Building Materials
The walls of the house are made with bricks
held together with cement mortar. Outer walls
are 9" thick and internal partition walls are
4.5" thick. Most of the interior walls are
painted ash white. Terrace and porch are made
with marble.

• Family Structure
The owner of the house Dr. Shehbaz Malik is
80 years old. Around 2 years back he shifted in
this house along with his two sons and their
families. Hence, this is a house made for joint
family.
• Comfort

The house is not up to the mark in

terms of comfort levels. The rooms
are not properly ventilated and are hot.
During the summer season, drawing room
and one bedroom that is placed on north side
are cool at daytime. In the winter season , the
roof, terrace and lawn have sufficient
exposure to the sun during the day. Currently,
migration is not practised in this house.
Invertor Air conditioners are installed inside
which makes migration unnecessary.
No proper shading devices are given and no
other passive techniques are used to
maintain thermal comfort in the house.
Typological
Level
The analysis is carried out at the
typological level to assess the historical
context of a structure and see how it
links to the past. The relationship
between the past and present, as well
as the evolution of design, is examined,
as is its connection to nature. The
regeneration processes are also
examined.
• Building type
This is a modern house made for two families.
The typical layout plan of a house is
transformend to meet the needs of the two
families where both of them can live in the
same house without compromising their
privacy.
• Layout
The guests can enter the drawing room from
gali on the ground floor and from the stairs on
the first floor without entering into the private
zone of the house. The residents and other
family members can enter into the living room
directly. Bedrooms are placed at the back where
level of privacy increases. Bedrooms area and
the living area are separated by a door.
• Biophilic Design
Lack of nature elements in the house. There
is only a lawn at the front which has climbers,
plants and flowers.
Archetypal
Level
At a typological level, the analysis
makes use of iconic design cues,
patterns, and shapes that are most
frequently seen in sacred buildings
around the globe. The natural language
of space is spoken by buildings at this
level, including up and down, right and
left, front and back, inside and outside,
close up and a long way away, darkness
and light, rough and smooth, warm and
cool, the horizontal and vertical, and
centre and periphery.
• Orientation in Space
University College Lahore( U.C.L) is situated on North East
of the house. The house is facing towards Shabbir Town
apartments which can be seen from the roof of the house
as well.

• Geometry
The house is built on rectangles and most of the rooms are of
rectangular geometry . No sacred architectural patterns or Isla
mic geometry is present .

• Spatial Polarities in Natural Settings

The house consists of both outdoor and indoor spaces.
The lawn at the front(west) doesnot have and shady trees
under whose shadows exterior refuge spaces are created.
Porch is covered with a shade which also creates an
exterior refuge. The terrace is also left unshaded and no
refuge space is created. Interior refuge spaces that are
bedrooms and living rooms are lacking shading devices
which are much hotter at daytime in summers due to their
west and east facing orientation.
Redesign of the
House
Wing walls are introduced and moveable vertical
louvers are installed on east and west facing
windows.
Wing walls are introduced with moveable vertical louvers on
east and west facing windows are installed. Moreover, terrace is
partially shaded with horizontal overhang.
Redesignin
g
• Wing walls are introduced in the kitchen to
prevent the odors from circulating in the house.
• Wing walls are also introduced in living area and
the bedrooms so that they are properly
ventilated.
• East and west facing windows were a problem
hence moveable vertical louvers are installed
in those windows.
• Previously, there was no exterior refuge space
on the terrace, therefore, horizontal overhang
shade is provided.
• Shady trees( living awnings) are grown in
the lawn infront of the living room window
which will create an exterior refuge space
plus
will provide shade to the living room's
windows
in summers.
• Living Room's small fixed window
(S.E) is removed since it also contributes in
heating the lounge and was of no use since it
was closed all the time.
