Jesus Institutes the Eucharist

What did Jesus do at the Last Supper on the night
He was betrayed?
At the Last Supper, on the night He was betrayed, our Savior instituted
the Eucharistic Sacrifice of His Body and Blood.
• A memorial of His death and resurrection
• A sacrament of love, a sign of unity and bond of charity
• A paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with
grace
• A pledge of futurglory is e given to us.
How does Mark's Gospel present Jesus' institution
of the Eucharist?
The First part in the account of (Mark 14:12-26) highlights the
preparations that Jesus and His disciples did for the Feast of the
Passover.
What is a Passover meal?
Passover meal is a family meal often celebrated by family members
whose main presider is the father of the family.
The Passover meal is a celebrated according to the pattern the Israelites
had before they were finally able to gain liberation from the bondage of
oppression by the Egyptians (Exodus 12:1-13).
Why did Jesus use the Bread and wine?

In the Old Covenant, bread and wine were offered in sacrifice among the
first fruits of the earth, in acknowledging God as the Creator of all.
What is the significance of Jesus' statements, "This is
My Body" and "This is My Blood"?
 In Jesus declaration "This is My Body," He identified Himself with the
bread that is to be shared by all.
 Jesus said "This is My blood," He was giving up His life on the cross for
the sake of many people.
What is the challenge behind Jesus' declaration, "Do
this in memory of Me"?
 When Christ commanded the apostles "Do this in memory of Me," He did
not mean what we today usually have in mind in celebrating various
anniversaries, birthday parties and the like.
How do we define the Eucharist?
 Based on Catechism for Filipino Catholics, 1677, we define the Eucharist:
 First, the Eucharist was instituted by Christ.
 Secondly, the Eucharist is celebrated with Christ by the Christian
community, the Church.
 Thirdly, the Eucharist is at once both sacrifice and sacred meal.
 Fourthly, Christ Himself is really present in the Eucharist celebration in
multiple ways, but especially under the sacramental signs of bread and
wine.
Why did Christ institute the Eucharist?
 Christ instituted the Eucharist at His Last Supper with His apostles,
so that His bloody sacrifice on the Cross could be perpetuated
through all ages.
