Goal setting
Vidic and Burton (2010)

• 1) What factors does the paper outline to influence

effective goal setting? (Also Weinberg, 2010)

• 2) What are the strengths and limitations of the

methods used?
– Specifically with the procedure
Weinberg (2010)

• 1) What are your critical thoughts regarding

the three phases used to guide the setting of
goals in the case study?
Scenario
Mike is a 19-year old university football scholar who was deemed ‘talented’ by his
coaches from an early age. After a promising start to the season, the university
team has now lost 4 matches in a row. The coach has noticed a significant change
in Mike’s behaviour; he has been the very last to arrive in 6 out of 10 practises, and
missed a key training session recently before an important home game. The coach
has commented that when things are going their way, Mike looks energised,
determined, and is vocal out on the pitch. However, more recently Mike has looked
listless and passive on the field. The coach has tried taking a hard-line with Mike
and threatening not to play him if he doesn’t show up for practice. Mike has also
had a meeting with the scholarship director. Neither seem to have helped.

The coach feels like there is something ‘missing’ in Mike’s attitude and play, and
has asked him to complete a performance profile and the ‘Task and Ego
Orientation in Sport Questionnaire’ (TEOSQ).

The coach would like your help in assessing what could be up with Mike, and
working 1:1 with him.

Task Ego
2 4.3
Your Task
1. Based on the information you have, come up with a
hypothesis for Mike’s change in behaviour

2. Based on you hypothesis:

a) Set some goals for Mike. You can set these out however you
choose, but consider:
- the types of goals
- Time frame (short- ,medium-, long-term?)
- How you will assist Mike’s adherence to the goals
- How you will evaluate the efficacy of the goals

b) Outline some recommendations for how the coach

might work with Mike more effectively
