2. IDENTITY VS IDENTITY – THIS IS WHEN THEY EXPLORE AND EXPERIMENT
THROUGH VARIOUS ROLES AND EXPERIENCES. THE DEGREE OF
EXPLORATION DEFINES THE IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT.
• IN THIS STAGE, THEY ARE INTO SEEKING THEIR OWN SENSE OF INDIVIDUALITY
AND UNIQUENESS.
• FEEL FOR PEER APPROVAL, ADULT IDENTITY AND ACCEPTANCE.
• AS THEY SEARCH FOR IDENTITY, THE FEELING VULNERABILITY ARISES AS
THEY BECOME AWARE TO THEIR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SELF AND OTHERS.
• EARLY ADOLESCENTS ARE INTENSE AND UNPREDICTABLE. TEND TO BE MOODY,
RESTLESS, ERRATIC AND ANXIOUS.
• SELF-CONSCIOUS AND SENSITIVE TOWARDS CRITICISM.
• DURING THIS STAGE, SELF-ESTEEM ARISES AND IMPROVES WHILE SELF-
COMPETENCE IN ACADEMIC SUBJECTS DECLINE.
• THEY ALSO LIKELY TO BE MELLOW DRAMATIC, EXAGGERATE PALTRY MATTERS
AND SPEAKING OUT NAIVE OPINIONS.
• THEY USUALLY MAKE CHOICES WITH NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES BECAUSE THEY
BELIEVE THAT THEIR EXPERIENCES, FEELINGS AND PROBLEMS ARE UNIQUE.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
• IT REFERS TO THE MATURITY OF INTERACTION WITH INDIVIDUALS OR
GROUP.
• THIS STAGE IS WHERE THEY LONG TO BE IN A PEER GROUP AND
EXPERIENCE CONFLICTING LOYALTIES TOWARDS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
• THEY TEND TO MIMIC BEHAVIORS FROM OTHERS TO BE ACCEPTED. THEY
ARE TORN BETWEEN BEING ACCEPTED AND UNIQUE.
• THIS STAGE IS WHERE THEY MEET CIRCLE OF FRIENDS AND EXPERIENCE
ROMANTIC AND SEXUAL ATTRACTION TOWARDS OTHERS.
• BULLYING ALSO STARTS TO BE VISIBLE.
• THEY ALSO START TO BE REBELLIOUS TOWARDS THEIR PARENTS AND YET
STILL DEPEND ON THEM.
• THEY EXAGGERATE REACTIONS TOWARDS ISSUES. WHEN THEY FEEL THE
FEELING OF REJECTING, THEY SEEK THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT OF THEIR
PEER GROUP.
• THESE CHANGES ARE NATURAL AND MUST BE APPRECIATED.
• ACCEPTANCE MEANS DEVELOPMENT AND EVENTUALLY, THESE CHANGES
WILL BE A HELP TO COPE BETTER WITH THEIR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES.
